The so-called Spanish Jews originated from Spain and Portugal, but had been expelled years earlier. Many still remained in the Iberian peninsula, practising either their new religion in public or Judaism in secret (see crypto-Jews or Marranos), or both. The newly independent and tolerant Dutch provinces provided more favorable conditions for observant Jews to establish a community, and practise their religion openly. They migrated most notably to Amsterdam, and as they established themselves, collectively brought new trading expertise and connections to the city.

After having been refused admission to Middelburg and Haarlem, these Marranos arrived in Amsterdam in 1593. Among them were prominent merchants and persons with in-demand skills. They labored assiduously in common cause with the people and contributed materially to the prosperity of the country. They became strenuous supporters of the House of Orange and were in return protected by the stadholder. During the Twelve Years' Truce the commerce of the Dutch Republic increased considerably and a period of development had arrived. This was particularly true for Amsterdam, where the Marranos had moved their goods and base of operations to maintain their foreign trade relationships, including previous relationships with the Levant and with Morocco. The Emperor of Morocco had an ambassador at The Hague named Samuel Pallache, through whose mediation, in 1620, a commercial understanding was arrived at with the Barbary States.

The trade developed between the Dutch and Spanish South America was established particularly by these Spanish Jews. They also contributed to the establishment of the Dutch West Indies Company in 1621, and some of them sat on its directorate. The ambitious schemes of the Dutch for the conquest of Brazil were carried into effect through Francisco Ribeiro, a Portuguese captain, who is said to have had Jewish relations in Holland. Some years later, the Dutch in Brazil appealed for more craftsmen of all kinds, and many Jews heeded the call. In 1642 about 600 Jews left Amsterdam, accompanied by two distinguished scholars – Isaac Aboab da Fonseca and Moses Raphael de Aguilar. The Jews strongly supported the Dutch Republic in its struggle with Portugal for the possession of Brazil, but with its loss they would seek refuge in other Dutch settlements including in the Caribbean and New Amsterdam.

After being expelled from the Iberian Peninsula, most of the Sephardic Jews settled in trading cities such as London and Antwerp. By the late sixteenth century they were arriving in Amsterdam and The Hague. The Lopes Suassos were a rich old Sephardic family of Marranos, or Jews who had been forced to convert to Christianity under pressure from the Spanish Inquisition, but once in Amsterdam they openly returned to their true religion, Judaism.[1]
Suasso was born in Amsterdam, the eldest son[2] of the banker Antonio Lopes Suasso (1614–1685), also known as Isaac Israel Suasso, by his marriage to Violenta de Pinto, a member of another rich old Sephardic family.[1][3] His father, who had himself been born in Bordeaux, was one of the richest and most famous Portuguese-Jewish merchants in the Amsterdam of his day.[3]
Suasso joined his father’s banking business.[1] He continued a successful banking career after the death of his father in 1685, when he inherited half of his father’s considerable fortune, much of which was in the form of shares in the Dutch East India Company.[5]
In 1682 Suasso married firstly Judith Francisco Teixeira, at Hamburg. She was the daughter of the banker Manuel (otherwise Isaac) Teixeira, who after Suasso’s father and De Pinto was the third most important Portuguese-Jewish merchant-banker in Northern Europe, by his marriage to Beatrix Nunes Henriques.[2]
A notable instance of the support of the house of Suasso to the Dutch stadtholders is the loan of two million guilders which Suasso made to William of Orange in 1688 in support of his invasion of England to claim the thrones of King James II.[1] The story is told that William asked Suasso what he wanted as collateral for the millions, to which Suasso replied: “If thou art felicitous, I know thou wilt return them to me; art thou infelicitous, I agree to having lost them.”
Suasso was responsible for a number of elements of the invasion, and through his father-in-law in Hamburg he was able to make speedy arrangements for the transport of Swedish and Pomeranian troops provided in November 1688 by Charles XI of Sweden to assist William.[6] The coffer in which William repaid the loan to Suasso is today on display in the Willet-Holthuisen Museum in Amsterdam.[1]

In October 2013, the ties between the countries were strained when a group of Greenpeace activists were arrested during a protest on an Arctic oil rig owned by Gazprom. On October 9, the minister counsellor Dmitri Borodin, working at the Russian embassy in The Hague, was detained after allegations of abusing his children.[5] Dutch minister of foreign affairs Frans Timmermans apologized later for the violation of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. Subsequently, on October 15, the Dutch diplomat Onno Elderenbosch was physically attacked in his apartment in Moscow by two men posing as electricians.[6] During the 2014 Sochi Olympic Games, Vladimir Putin visited the Holland Heineken House and drank a beer with King Willem Alexander.[7]

Willem-Alexander has also been active in the field of water management at an international level. In 1998, he became the patron of the Global Water Partnership. In 2000, he was Chair of the Second World Water Forum in The Hague. In 2006, the Prince was asked by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan to succeed the former Japanese Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto as chair of the United Nations Secretary-General's Advisory Board on Water and Sanitation (UNSGAB). The Prince holds this role until he becomes the King.

UNSGAB provides the Secretary-General with independent advice, and lobbies worldwide for practical measures to achieve the Millennium Development Goal on water and sanitation. This year, the Netherlands hosted UN World Water Day on March 22. It was Prince Willem-Alexander's last official function in his role as chair of the UNSGAB. At the end of the conference, the Dutch Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation, LiliannePloumen, thanked the Prince for his work for the UNSGAB. "Bernhard, a secret history" has revealed that the prince was a member of the German Nazi party until 1934, three years before he married Princess Juliana, the future queen of the Netherlands.

Annejet van der Zijl, a Dutch historian, has found membership documents in Berlin's Humboldt University that prove Prince Bernhard, who studied there, had joined Deutsche Studentenschaft, a National Socialist student fraternity, as well as the Nazi NSDAP and its paramilitary wing, the Sturmabteilung.

He left all the groups on leaving university in December 1934, when he went to work for the German chemical giant, IG Farben.

The prince always denied having been a member of the Nazi party, although he admitted that he briefly had sympathised with Adolf Hitler's regime. In one of the last interviews he gave before his death in 2004, he said: "I can swear this with my hand on the Bible: I was never a Nazi."
