I think the US did not go far enough. We should have taken all of central America down to Panama and genocided the natives. Then the border of the USA could have been the tiny Panama canal instead of miles of Mexican border.

This is the only really effective thing the US has to do to pay its karmic debt with Mexico.

Otherwise Mexicans will keep jumping the border and occupying the land that is rightfully theirs.

if i remember right we had 2 wars with mexico. First war gave us most of the west. 2nd war we pretty much bought the very bottom slice of arizona and nevada at a terrible price, buying it was almost a spit in the face, instead of just taking it

Texas, and the lands that were Texas at the time, fought a war of independence. Those who fought for independence included both Hispanic and Caucasian Texans. Their independence was recognized by Mexico. They did not join the United States until later.

So Texas, and all the lands that were Texas at the time....Mexico has zero claim to.

During the Mexican War the only matter in dispute were the borders. Mexico claimed that Texas border was at the Nueces River. The United States claimed the Texas border was at the Rio Grande.

The only territory in question then is the Mexican Cession and the Gadsden Purchase. Since the Gadsden Purchase was a purchase and money changed hands and that check was cashed....Mexico has no claim whatsoever to that territory. None.

That leaves only the territory of the Mexican Cession.

This territory was ceded to the US through treaty which was ratified through a Mexican legislative vote of 51 to 34 and a Senate vote of 33 to 4, on 19 May 1848.

All but 1000 Mexican citizens of the territory chose to take US citizenship instead of retain Mexican citizenship.

Since that time the Mexican government has engaged with the United States on adjustments of the border and small territorial exchanges...further highlighting their acceptance of the border over a long period of time and through multiple governments.

The Mexican-American War was not a just war. But Mexico accepted the outcome, ratified the treaty, and recognized it for over 150 years now and that has really extinguished any real claims.

With the defeat of its army and the fall of the capital, Mexico entered into negotiations to end the war. The treaty called for the United States to pay $15 million to Mexico and pay off the claims of American citizens against Mexico up to $3.25 million. It gave the United States the Rio Grande boundary for Texas, and gave the U.S. ownership of California, and a large area comprising New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, and parts of Wyoming and Colorado. Mexicans in those annexed areas had the choice of relocating to within Mexico's new boundaries or of receiving American citizenship with full civil rights. Over 90% chose the latter.

Let's be honest, it never belonged to Mexico. Spain claimed it because no-one else did. The Spanish/Native Mexican cross children who won a revolution against Spain claim it, but they had no moral right to it.
