Severe Thunderstorm, 7/20/14, very loud booms then power went out
I live in the Lake Tahoe area. There was a powerful thunderstorm that came in from the east, from the Gardnerville/Minden, Nevada area. Lightning was intense. Four houses in the South Lake Tahoe area were hit by lightning. As the storm moved to the northwest, and it appeared it was dying down, we heared 4 very loud booms, and then the power went out around 4:30pm. Power was out over a very large area including all of South Lake Tahoe, Stateline, and parts north of there. Carson City, NV, as well as areas south of there including Gardnerville and Minden had major power outages also. Power was out until around 9:30pm for us. Tried to find out why the power went out, as in what caused the power to go out, a transformer being hit, power lines down, something, but could find nothing online about this, and still haven't found out the direct cause. Very little info available online or in local newspapers even today, two days later. Never heard lightning make the booms we heard! Very intense. Shook the ground and the house. Some businesses in town I went to the next couple of days said they were having problems with their electonic equipment, computers, phones, etc.. Been in lots of lightning storms, but nothing like this one.

Totally is, I agree.

A link to a twitter feed or something related to the subject would have been nice.

Interesting story

Have found some information on the storm. Apparently, a lightning strike occurred in an NV Energy substation south of Carson City, Nev.

"The substation gives power to both NV Energy and Liberty Utilities substations in South Lake Tahoe that provide electricity to the community. Power was out for about six hours for some customers.

South Lake Tahoe's police department was without power because "...their generator did not operate as it should...".

All 9-1-1 calls were re-routed throught the Placer County Sheriff's department in Placerville, CA.

During the storm, some people in South Lake Tahoe were kept informed of the power outage caused by the weather through the use of its Facebook page. About 15,000 people saw the Facebook postings, (I didn't because I don't use Facebook, and my landline phone system was without power, der!)

The SLT police department had the same problem their landlines were without power. They used cell phones to issue information.

South Lake Tahoe is now, "...asking the public to register their cell and landline phone numbers to receive updates in emergency situations. People can register at ready.edso.org..." due to this storm.

Get a scanner or something. Even a camping radio with a weather band if nothing else.

Sounds like a nasty storm.

Typical US infrastructure. That police station should be testing their systems at least once a month for reliability....idiots.

Thanks for updating thread hf

A few years ago I was standing on the front porch watching a storm when lighting hit a transformer about a half a block away, the sound from the transformer exploding sounded like a bomb going off ,the flash of light was brighter than the sun. We were without power for four days in the middle of summer in Missouri.do not disrespect lighting!5a

I've talked to some people in the area and they said they've never seen a storm like this one. Neither have I.

Wtf do you mean the storms have changed?

Thunder is loud....yes

Lightning is bright.....yes

I will not call anyone an idiot unless they've earned it.

Please elaborate on your theory.

Usually a story like that would cause me to call you an idiot, but I was interested so...

Take my advice and be a little more prepared when stuff like this happens.

Be self reliant!
