Maryland Govt (MVA) Collecting Data On Who Is A Military Vet
Had to go to the Maryland DMV (MVA) for license renewal and they were asking if I was a military veteran. I asked why and they stated that if I was a vet in would be indicated on the license.

I asked what benefit it would be and they said I could get discounts for being a vet by just showing the license.

WTF?????

I think they are archiving this info in a database so that if there is ever a SHTF scenerio they have a complete record on you.

Any thoughts/explanations????

Come on OP...

The military has your records.

The NSA has your records.

If you held any kind of security clearance, you are in just about alphabet soups database.

Now, do you think the DMV is really going after you, when there are so many easier places to get your credentials?

The question is why do they want that info? Your right in that the military already has it,

Is it so that the state/local police will have that info in their database too?

I just did a google search for - veteran status dmv

It looks like a lot of states are doing this now, I haven't heard of it until now.

I wouldn't worry so much about the states, the feds (like other posters said) already know everything.

The websites for different states seem to say the same thing your DMV did...It's to help showing status for discounts etc.

"might" help you get out of a ticket once in awhile, probably not though. :)

What helps get out of a ticket (sometimes) is an actual current ID card, be it a CAC or a retiree card.

Simply serving in the military would technically make one a veteran, but do you know how many people get out before they can actually retire? Like... almost everyone. Once you get out you no longer have a military ID card, and therefore don't usually get discounts etc.

I don't know what benefit there would be to having this veteran status shown on your drivers license other than to make it easier to single out and track veterans. Yes the info is available in many other places, but as I said most veterans don't have a military ID card. It would be quicker/easier to see who's a vet if it's on the same card that EVERYONE has.

I have a few thoughts rattling around in my head as to why they would want to know who is a vet, but it's a little out there. I'm still trying to figure it out but I will say that I feel like a completely different person than before I enlisted back in '06. Different like... unnaturally different.

Like I'm not even ME.
