Gilead Sciences’ new hepatitis C drug receives as much praise for its healing powers as it receives criticism of its price, $84,000 for 12 weeks. Those parallel storylines played out even further in a prominent scientific journal’s latest edition, published online over the weekend.
and yes it does cure Hep-c!

1000 dollars for 1 pill... u must take a min of 12 to 15 pills at 1000 dollars an pill! plus tests = 84000 dollars

Amid concerns over the high cost of its new treatment for hepatitis C, drugmaker Gilead Sciences Inc. reported $5.8 billion in sales for its blockbuster Sovaldi drug in the first half of 2014.

The successful product launch boosted Gilead's second-quarter results released Wednesday, but the drug's price tag of $1,000 per pill continues to upset lawmakers, health insurers and state Medicaid programs worried about the negative effect on healthcare costs.

The healthcare system will save a lot of money with these people being healthy again.
- John Milligan, Gilead's president and chief operating officer
The San Francisco-area company said Wednesday that about 70,000 U.S. patients have been prescribed Sovaldi since it launched in December. A 12-week course of treatment costs about $84,000.

This month, two U.S. senators asked Gilead to produce documents to explain its rationale for pricing Sovaldi out of concern about increased costs for government healthcare programs such as Medicare and Medicaid. Gilead said it's cooperating with that request.

$1000-a-pill hepatitis C drug jolts US health care system
Taken once a day for 12 weeks, Sovaldi greatly reduces the length of interferon treatment, making things more tolerable for patients. Now, many more people might want to try the cure.

A similar drug, Olysio, also approved last year, is priced a bit lower.

The nation's largest care provider for chronic hepatitis C, the federal Veterans Administration, sees promise. With 175,000 patients, the VA has started more than 1,850 of them on Sovaldi.

"After 20 years in infectious diseases, I never thought we would be in a position to cure this disease," said Dr. David Ross, head of the VA's program.
