We never believe the media, so are we are all believing the Ebola scare?

I think the media is downplaying the danger it holds for the U.S.

So you can believe or not believe as you choose.

Some of us ( rare divergent types ) can see this distraction for what it is. They always throw a pandemic into the propaganda cycle when they want to up the fear ante or when their recent disinfo isn't working.

Bird flu, pig flu, ebola...Rinse and repeat.

Why the U.S? With air travel being so far reaching, isn't everywhere up for grabs? Or is it because of the border problem there?

Anyway, my point being is, every time the mass media calls things "terrifying" "horrific" and so on, we all know that its just bullshit propaganda to keep us in fear and keep is controlled, why are we reacting differently to this? Its like is an experiment to see how we react to a new danger, world wide virus. Or maybe its to keep us distracted from what the news has been focused so much on lately (Israel, Gaza, Ukraine, Russia, Isis and maybe the new wikileaks leak?)

My issue is they are to quiet. Remember the swine flu?? OMG, quick get the vaccine! Prepare or you are going to die!! Yeah, so this seems different to me.

What about the other 70% of the worlds land mass that is either joined to or within 10km of water of Africa? There is about 2000km of water separating Africa and the USA..

Well here in the UK the BBC and others are jumping all over it, "Ebola threat to UK" "There is no cure". Blatant scare tactics.

H1N1, have we all forgotten that? Massive news, telling us it will spread to everywhere. Where is it now? While wikipedia says its in 214 countries and over 18 thousand deaths so far, it is all but forgotten by the MSM. Because the it lost its scare effect when people realised they weren't getting it. I agree Ebola is much worse, but I'm just highlighting that stories in the news come and go.

I actually didn't hear about it on the news.

I hear about it from a nurse friend of mine who works at JPS which is the hospital the doctor who has is it, did his residency at last year.

So it hits a little bit close to home for me.

I worry what work must be like for any of the staff at these hospitals today. Do you think they freak out too?

Indeed it will, I see nothing of the wikileaks leak, its all clouded by ebola and Israel. Who the west seemed to have turned on? All games I know

Like I said in a post above, there may very well be an outbreak, but according to the world health organisation, 500 thousand people die every year from the common cold. Thats more than the current 18 thousand from H1N1 from the last "shock pandemic". We've seen this before, we keep falling for it.

And I imagine the workers at hospitals know that the outbreak is in a third world country that have no real containment measures like we do in developed countries so their worry migh be eased, they know their stuff, however no doubt it must be at the back of their minds.

Look at the timing of this distraction. Israel / Palestine and more importantly the growing global backlash to this crisis are now on the backburner.

You can control global emotions and minds when you're in control of global media.

Fear sells, real or imagined. More died in car wrecks last week than have died from Ebola the last 10 years. Be afraid...

I'm with you OP. If its news, then its not news so far as I'm concerned.

Its the cherry picking of facts and trigger words such as "threat" "no cure" and the expulsion of other facts that make facts scare tactics.

So to answer your question, using the right facts can be scary......and leaving out other facts makes the stated facts more scary....

Facts are facts regardless of who's reporting on them or not reporting on them. Disregarding something just because of the source is the ad hominem fallacy, it's dumb no matter how you look at it.
