Does this mean we'll finally have a rocket that works in space?
Quoting: Anonymous Coward 74663166

I can't begin to describe the level of fail in this question.

[link to en.wikipedia.org (secure)]

The main problem is carrying enough fuel for a long-term voyage. It masses a lot and can only be compressed so much. This new drive, if it works as stated, could alleviate some of that problem.
Quoting: a Dude, not THE Dude

Agreed even for a round trip to Mars taking the best part of two years, The amount fuel, food, water etc the ship needs. for the whole journey is huge.
Certainly for example, they ,talk about finding water on mars. It is there but is it fit for humans to drink? How long will it take to produce enough fuel for a retun trip to earth? Hard hard is it to do on Mars?

The anser is we won't know for sure until people actually go to mars and try these things. The first trips will need to leave earth with all the supplies they need for the round trip. That is why, in view conventional rocket propulsion is not suitable for traver further than, say, the moon,

We need to find new ways to propel spacecraft and at much faster speeds that they can now.

So the rumors continue to swirl. While I’m not a big conspiracy guy and by definition this is really not a conspiracy (I’d define it as secrecy), it’s starting to check all my boxes. Think about it. If there is a “potentially” new means of propulsion and all tests to date seem to show anomalous thrust, then it is actually your responsibility as a superpower to stay ahead of the curve. That said, it is in no way outlandish to think that the Chinese are testing this on their space station or that DARPA has included a test module in one of their latest payloads. For all we know these rumored tests have failed in the vacuum of space and this story will fade away. On the other hand, we could be witnessing the start of a whole new era of space exploration. Time will tell……

It could explain why the latest X-37B mission has been up there so long, perhaps to test the performance of, and stress-test the lifespan of one of these devices in space. Or it could just be a new Hall thruster for fighting orbital drag. It would be very hard to distinguish those possibilities simply by tracking the orbit since both are low-thrust high-efficiency engines. As you said, only time will tell.

<with a hint of sarcasm>

Wow, these are some ambitious claims! So we are talking about Q and superconductors now? Translation > rainbows and unicorns are now in play.

If I could whisper into Mr. Shawyer’s ear, I would say “baby-steps dude……cool your jets”. These grandiose claims are not doing him any good IMO.

While I have not had time to put pencil to paper regarding these claims, it would appear we are talking about a degree of scalability that would put the closest stars within reach during my lifetime and I am a “forty-something”.

Anyway, at the end of the day his recent claims really have no bearing as to the viability of this potential technology……I get that. It does however give me pause in regards to the man himself.

Just read the first paper and this certainly seems legit. “Technically” this does seem to break the law of conservation of momentum.

I am no expert in any relevant field, but I thought a good deal of universal laws broke down once one entered the field of quantum mechanics? I mean, the wikipedia article suggests this is known physics, just known quantum physics. Can anyone more qualified clarify? I'm out of my league here.

[link to en.wikipedia.org]
Quoting: Anonymous Coward 5258639

I would disagree with this.

To quote, "A number of notable physicists have found the Q-thruster concept to be implausible. For example, mathematical physicist John Baez has criticized the reference to "quantum vacuum virtual plasma" noting that: "There's no such thing as 'virtual plasma' ".[60] Noted Caltech theoretical physicist Sean M. Carroll has also affirmed this statement, writing "[t]here is no such thing as a ‘quantum vacuum virtual plasma,’...".[61] In addition, Lafleur found that quantum field theory predicts no net force, implying that the measured thrusts are unlikely to be due to quantum effects"

If the physical concepts are unknown how could the acutal physics be understood or known.

Again, NASA is not actively promoting this as a viable means of space travel. In fact, they are distancing themselves from it.

There are different ways to interpret this behavior. Personally, I'm unsure what to think about it.

item from 2012:

Fusion Power Advances in Magnetic Crushing Test
TechNewsDaily Staff

Date: 20 September 2012 Time: 01:00 PM ET

The experiment at Sandia National Laboratories in New Mexico tested how well a tiny cylinder could withstand the crushing magnetic force from the lab's "Z machine" — a pulsed-power accelerator that zapped the cylinder with 25 million amperes of electric current. The "liner" cylinder collapsed on itself, as would be expected, but remained intact enough to theoretically squeeze together deuterium or tritium fuel, triggering nuclear fusion.

All scientists are liars about what is light. Do you understand?

Science says light is electrons change orbitals and emit energy pockets/photons. That is total BS.

How electrons change orbitals? What is the mechanism?

How many photons can an electron emit per second? Where are the photons come from?

Most photons are color less, like radio wave photons, x-rays.

Strange thing is photons have no mass, no charge, how can they able to carry em fields.

How does an electron know what color of photon should emit? what direction? how many? what speed?

WHAT IS THE MECHANISM?

Is any scientists able to answer those questions?

Hello GLP I am a long time lurker and minor asshole, but I'm really an old fart who knows stuff, this subject is one of my favourite, as I have stumbled upon how this drive works and can explain it unfairly simple terms. Get ready to understand the quantum drive.
First the QD does not emit photons or protons, it emits electrons.
These electrons are so.ply put transmuted through the chamber and blast through the back, the super conductors keep the speed increasing as it hits the last wall, then the electronic basically wiggles through the wall because there is no more room inside the chamber that can accommodate it's incredible speed, this wiggling effect is basically where the thrust comes from, the electrons simply fall through the wall with all energy expended, then the microvibrations propel the electronic away and that creates thrust, keep in mind the speed never decreases because the speed of the electronic leaving the cavity is null plus microthrust this equals the current speed plus "one".
Thank you for your time, now flame on bitches 🤣

The EM Drive does not have sufficient Delta-v to achieve earth orbit. (not even close)

In simple terms, we will still need to use brute force to get an EM powered craft into space. However, once there, the sky is the limit. Everything changes......

1. Einstein's theories are all mistakes.

Photoelectric effect theory won him a Nobel. Later he admit it was mistaken. All these fifty years of conscious brooding have brought me no nearer to the answer to the question, 'What are light quanta?' Nowadays every Tom, D i c k and Harry thinks he knows it, but he is mistaken. -Albert Einstein 1953

He thought gravity able to slow down light. If a star has enough mass, its light will be slow down so much and make it invisible, so black hole.

In reality, all star lights have the same speed C. Real black hole is in every toilet.

He thought the sun's gravity able to bend light so at solar eclipse we can see stars behind the sun.

In fact, hot plasma on sun's surface reflect/bend those stars light behind the sun. So those dumb scientists able to took a picture back then to support his theory.

He thought nothing can travel at light speed due to unlimited energy is needed.

Mistaken, he don't even sure what is energy/quantum.

All the motion is caused by force, electrostatic force. f=ma, enough force able to push matter at any speed.

But force has a speed limit, electrostatic force and gravity have same speed as light speed. A train travels at 100 m/h cannot push a man to 101/m/h.

E=Mcc is total bs. Matter is charged particles, energy is the electrostatic force matter carries.

2. Solar sail and EM drive both will not work.

Sun light has NO momentum. Solar sailing is a lie/mistake. Easy to proof, if sun light has momentum, how about Army laser? Those laser able to ignite missiles miles away, but not able to spin a light mill in hard vacuum. Why? Light is vibrating EM force, not photon/quanta particles that carry momentum.

EM drive is impossible. Without mass ejection in space, there is NO momentum changing, no force to accelerate.

3. Maxwell was wrong.

There is no electric field and magnetic field reproducing at right angle and move at light speed, no transverse waves travel in space.

Why? Because both fields must have force carrier/charged particle to carry it. But space contains none.

Free electrons in a conductor synchronized vibrate, produce vibrating EM field. Other free electrons in other conductors follow the vibrating energy/EM force and vibrate at the same frequency. That is the true mechanism of EM waves.
