Re: Another MD Tests Positive for Ebola
These people aren't getting infected while
they are in their Bio hazard gear. They are
catching it from people who are infected
and contagious but not showing symptoms yet.
They are also outside the clinics and hospitals
when they catch it. It would also indicate the virus is living on surfaces longer than usual.
It could be anywhere, on money, railings, door
handles, etc.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 59473822

Bio-Hazard gear..Give me a break...a Tyvek suit, a N95 mask, a pair of latex gloves and some safety glasses isn't "Bio-Hazard" gear....It might get you by while cleaning up mold but against Ebola, IT HAS NO CHANCE.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 61096084

According to the CDC the N95 should protect against exposure to both aerosol and airborne bacteria and viruses.

Also, what strain is this, Zaire? I haven't seen it reported but perhaps this is a mutated one that has gone below the 5 micron threshold where one would need a Class IV bio-suit with respirator and not a standard hazmat getup.

That also would imply it's airborne.
 Quoting: John Difool

Did you see the biohazard gear the escort had on at Emery Hospital? Respirator and the full nine yards.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 52914499

Yes, but the medical personnel in Africa aren't, they're dressing up in stuff you can gather at your local Home DEpot or Lowe's.
 Quoting: John Difool

And ask yourself why they need that level of protection if the virus is not airborne?

I believe I've read that it is not Zaire, but assumed to be a mutated strain. That was about a week ago, and not a word has been said since. I am guessing that is why they wanted to bring the 2 EBOLA Patients to the USA, to study the virus and see if it is a mutation. That's the only thing that makes a tiny bit of sense. Also more worrisome if that really was The Ebola Patient who walked out of the ambulance into the hospital.

What scares me most is scientists still aren't sure what the original vector for the virus is, it's source origin. Was it a bat or some other rodent, primates or even a plant? Humans aside, if this gets loose over here it can very well get introduced into our wildlife and flora and it will never be gotten rid of and will mutate over and over again.

This is serious. I think the reason it's spreading is that people especially doctors who should have known Better are seen in photos handling or standing over dead bodies using incorrect , or no protection at all. This makes people who don't know imitate them.

I noticed some workers with gloves on and plastic suits but no Tape at the glove where it meets the sleeve. Duct tape can be used.

Also the feet where the pants leg comes over the boot should be taped.

The tents they are using over there are also poor contaiment and seem to be open. They are also walkng out of one tent on to the grass and into the nest tent. Unless their closing off the whole area. This could be causing spread of the disease.

After each shift you exit the area under stricy decontamination proceedures and incinerate the suits. Clorox the area and tools.

this would all take place on Tarps.

Sooner or later you are going to realize that something is happening. All the various dooms are taking place, they have their own schedule. This will not spread overnight, but over months, and by then it will have lost the public interest. Expect this to gradually worsen. Early on there will be one or two isolated cases reported in "this state", or "that state". A gradual ramp up.

Before gearing up in any type of NBC gear, the user analyzes the threat type. Such gear is not wore from paranoia, but appropriate planning. Gear designed for the level and type of threat are selected. These are not a bunch of superstitious fools, they are people of science. The gear they are wearing tells the real story or what they believe they are dealing with.

Yes, incubation seems to be longer and this strain doesn't seem to be as lethal and it's more contagious for some reason.

I remember seeing a photo of Dr. Brantly in Liberia, treating a patient, all covered in gear, but the back of his neck and ear were exposed. I thought then -he was not protected. Looked like anything, air, mosquito, could get up under his chin and onto his face.

I think so. The now deceased hospital director was originally tested on 17th (neg result back on the 18th) so he was obviously showing symptoms and it was 11 days later (the 29th) that he tested positive. It seems that this strain (or mutation) is possibly killing well-fed, otherwise healthy victims slower than the original Zaire strain. hiding2

Brantley could have been infected off-site at a cafe or something and in turn done plenty of infecting before the first symptoms hit.

This thing has up to a 21 incubation period or 3 weeks.

I think we are seeing some airborne transmissions here. That said this disease does not defy the rules of cross contamination prevention. Medical personnel are failing to use proper methods. Probably because they all "know" that ebola is not airborne.

I could buy gear from Home Depot and feel safe as fuck. I'd want a quality painter's respirator, some good long vinyl gloves, a tyvek suit, shoe buddies, and some duct tape. I'd also want some safety goggles and a face shield.

Re: Another MD Tests Positive for Ebola
Things that bother me:

1. The false negatives on the tests - I've read of 3 so far. If the protocol in the US is to test and release, they could release people that are infected but aren't showing up on tests yet.

2. In the interview with Dr. Jamison (in TN), he said Dr. Brantly was meticulous about PPE and hygiene - 2 masks, layered, full gear, two sets of gloves, rubber boots, etc.
I know the local doctors may not be as meticulous but the international doctors know what they are doing. I think it is more virulent than they are saying (airborne?)

3. The fact that this new Ebola is taking longer to kill people is not a good thing. The old Ebola killed fast, which means it could fizzle out quickly before getting out of a community, and people were too sick to travel. But this new strain appears to take a while to make someone sick enough to make them immobile, which will make it spread more easily.
