They are catching it from people who are infected and contagious but not showing symptoms yet. They are also outside the clinics and hospitals when they catch it. It would also indicate the virus is living on surfaces longer than usual. It could be anywhere, on money, railings, door handles, etc. Bio-Hazard gear..Give me a break...a Tyvek suit, a N95 mask, a pair of latex gloves and some safety glasses isn't "Bio-Hazard" gear....It might get you by while cleaning up mold but against Ebola, IT HAS NO CHANCE. Also, what strain is this, Zaire? I haven't seen it reported but perhaps this is a mutated one that has gone below the 5 micron threshold where one would need a Class IV bio-suit with respirator and not a standard hazmat getup. That also would imply it's airborne. Did you see the biohazard gear the escort had on at Emery Hospital? Respirator and the full nine yards. Yes, but the medical personnel in Africa aren't, they're dressing up in stuff you can gather at your local Home DEpot or Lowe's. And ask yourself why they need that level of protection if the virus is not airborne? |

I am guessing that is why they wanted to bring the 2 EBOLA Patients to the USA, to study the virus and see if it is a mutation. That's the only thing that makes a tiny bit of sense. Also more worrisome if that really was The Ebola Patient who walked out of the ambulance into the hospital. |

Quoting: Lydia22 You all best buy some Personal Protection Equipment PPE some food... and stay home if a break out in your area happens. What scares me most is scientists still aren't sure what the original vector for the virus is, it's source origin. Was it a bat or some other rodent, primates or even a plant? Humans aside, if this gets loose over here it can very well get introduced into our wildlife and flora and it will never be gotten rid of and will mutate over and over again. |

Yes, incubation seems to be longer and this strain doesn't seem to be as lethal and it's more contagious for some reason. 3 things that will help it spread. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 26165384 United States 08/03/2014 08:48 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | This is serious. Is this part of it? - OR, do I misunderstand? Any help appreciated. Thanks. I think so. The now deceased hospital director was originally tested on 17th (neg result back on the 18th) so he was obviously showing symptoms and it was 11 days later (the 29th) that he tested positive. It seems that this strain (or mutation) is possibly killing well-fed, otherwise healthy victims slower than the original Zaire strain. Brantley could have been infected off-site at a cafe or something and in turn done plenty of infecting before the first symptoms hit. This thing has up to a 21 incubation period or 3 weeks. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 22196209 United States 08/03/2014 09:03 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Things that bother me: 1. The false negatives on the tests - I've read of 3 so far. If the protocol in the US is to test and release, they could release people that are infected but aren't showing up on tests yet. 2. In the interview with Dr. Jamison (in TN), he said Dr. Brantly was meticulous about PPE and hygiene - 2 masks, layered, full gear, two sets of gloves, rubber boots, etc. I know the local doctors may not be as meticulous but the international doctors know what they are doing. I think it is more virulent than they are saying (airborne?) 3. The fact that this new Ebola is taking longer to kill people is not a good thing. The old Ebola killed fast, which means it could fizzle out quickly before getting out of a community, and people were too sick to travel. But this new strain appears to take a while to make someone sick enough to make them immobile, which will make it spread more easily. |
