It's not for sale!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 23290711

So you would not sell your $20,000 worth of silver for $2,000,000 worth of gold eagles, of which you could turn right around and sell for either 100,000 Silver Eagles or buy back your original 1000 eagles and have $1,180,000 worth of Gold left over.

OK.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 50792176

Not the streets .... Elsewhere

Nobody would offer that at this time. So you are just playing games. So basically the debate is pointless.
 Quoting: KillerB

There is precedent to the question. I asked OP at what price would he sell, he said it's not for sale.

So he's just hanging on to it to toss it out into the street when the time comes? ha ha

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 23290711

It's not about have a legitimate medium of trade in a post apocalyptic scenario?

It's not about a hedge against inflation or monetary collapse?

Enlighten me, I'm listening.

Just remember "he" was NOT "sold" for 30 pieces of silver. It's was not a " sale" but a hidden message!

Ok so skip the cryticity, Jesus was not sold, he was betrayed for a few ounces of silver..... What would that have to do with silver reflecting light and having no monetary purpose? I think I'm bored with the thread now.

Hey OP,

I bought 10,000 oz. back when it was $7.70/oz. back in 2006.

Only .50 cent over spot and so worth it.

Have you factored in the depreciation of the dollar and the rise in prices over these 10 years? Truth be told, you probably lost rather than gained.

And in the future, you won't be able to eat the silver or gold. Food, water, and truth will be the only currencies.

Yes, however that 7 dollars he spent on an ounce is now worth a twenty dollar bill..where as if he still had those 7 dollars he could not buy the same thing(s) with it. Not everyone plans on specific scenarios. You just have to use your gut and be prepared for a range of different things. Still...better to put your money in metal than a savings account.

In the meantime, you could for example, pay off your mortgage by trading ten silver eagles for a wheelbarrow full of cash, as the terms of your mortgage in the US is dollars.

There was a bellboy in Germany who bought the hotel he formerly worked at with a silver tip a rich guy gave him, when the German economy crashed after WWI.

Or, if you insist, stick with cartoon FED script and starve to death in the six months it takes for society to recover and develop that "standardized currency" you are fantasizing about.

By the way, $77,000 2006 money vs. $220,000 2014 money doesn't sound like that bad of a hedge to me. Sure as hell beats real estate in the identical period! lol

You obviously did not read my above quote before the one that you quoted defending that very purchase. Nor did you understand what I said. Basically what i mean by standardized currency is the fact if SHTF silver may not necessarily be a tradeable commodity, but may in fact take a little while before people start readily exchanging metals *METALS BEING THE STANDARDIZED CURRENCY* for goods.

I don't get it either.
I want to know what reflectivity had to do with it.
If the OP is going to reflect light or frequency with his silver he should have bought bars, not rounds. Bars would look so cool glued to the wall and ceiling.
If it someway could protect from frequency penetration, then bars it is, not rounds.
And why maples and liberty's. One can purchase bullion, rounds or bars, at that quantity for 30 cents over spot.
One can go on to the KITCO site and purchase bullion from folks that are having to sell for dollars under spot. Maybe not 1000 at a time but buying that much silver would take a lot of finagling to stay under the radar.
Believe me if you were to buy 22k in anything there would be radar everywhere.

The only reason to buy US gubrnut issue would be to avoid sales tax or to use as payment for tax's in a few states. Bullion is taxable goods and so are maples.

Don't get me wrong, I see many applications that are still growing for silver and after watching silver for years, now is about as good a time as any to jump into the market.

As for gold, what if the huge boring machines have hit pockets of gold while building dumbs. Gold could possible be near worthless. Silver is almost just a byproduct of mining other minerals that needs a lot of refinement.

There are some that are fighting the nano anything fight. I see nano as a great possibility for silver and gold.

Solar is another big user of Silver but as graphene tech comes along that might alleviate the need for silver in lots of commercial needs.
What do we need to be preparing to reflect.

Sorry for the wall of text.

I actually gained.

I took positions and even sold at various times when it was between $32-41 per ounce.

I even invested $50k worth into a business, which because it was a capital investment and not income, I didn't have to pay any capital gains on the sale of it. :)

Thing is, I didn't want to be holding it when tshtf as I'm not a greedy person and if things turn bad, I didn't want to have all of that bullion (100 oz. Bars) on me.

I did buy Bitcoin back in 2012 also (care to guess the price and amount) and made a killing on that as well, but I took small loses here and there to be honest with you.

Thing is, when you buy so low and dollar average your gains, you really don't lose in the long run

ok...

Lets say you purchased gold at 250.00 an oz back around 2003. If you kept those sames dollars you would not have the purchasing power you did then. Now what is gold at? 1292.00?

Lets look at silver...

5.50 an oz around 2002, now silver is at 20.33.

So keep your dollars, because they are only going up in value.

One thing no one considers, is that in this corrupt system we deal with day to day, A small sack of silver will get you passed by when push comes to shove just like a couple of folded bills in a palm will make a reservation magically appear at the fine dining establishment.

While I was working, self-employed, the inspector was quite happy with my work after the case of bourbon was placed in the trunk of his government car.

A sack of silver or a piece of gold can buy you a lot of leverage.

Offering a bribe can get you in a lot of hot water, but say I had a 40 pieces of silver and said how I detested carrying these damn half dollars around. I ask if you had a 20 dollar bill to relieve me of all this pesky change, we could most likely solve many a small problem.

If vaccination became part of the upcoming program, I bet the government worker would vaccinate an orange for a chunk of gold. Get the picture.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 46255310

Yes, the picture is that you're a very unethical person who offers bribes, and are exactly the kind of person most of us would like to see perish in the next catastrophe.

Why would anybody want to eat silver?

Or, OTOH, why would anybody want to walk around with with even $20 worth of peanut butter or tuna fish in his pocket?

I just do not understand some people.
