Yes. But the story the CDC has been telling us is that Ebola only spreads when the host is symptomatic. This study could contradict such advice.

I dont buy into this ebola scare. Yes it is bad stuff once you get it, but it seems it is hiegene issue, as well as immune system strength.

Transmission of Ebola virus from pigs to non-human primates

Ebola viruses (EBOV) cause often fatal hemorrhagic fever in several species of simian primates including human. While fruit bats are considered natural reservoir, involvement of other species in EBOV transmission is unclear. In 2009, Reston-EBOV was the first EBOV detected in swine with indicated transmission to humans. In-contact transmission of Zaire-EBOV (ZEBOV) between pigs was demonstrated experimentally. Here we show ZEBOV transmission from pigs to cynomolgus macaques without direct contact. Interestingly, transmission between macaques in similar housing conditions was never observed. Piglets inoculated oro-nasally with ZEBOV were transferred to the room housing macaques in an open inaccessible cage system. All macaques became infected. Infectious virus was detected in oro-nasal swabs of piglets, and in blood, swabs, and tissues of macaques. This is the first report of experimental interspecies virus transmission, with the macaques also used as a human surrogate. Our finding may influence prevention and control measures during EBOV outbreaks.

Two possibilities

- Droplets containing the virus Ebola are responsible for the contagion.
- The virus is Airbone in the scientific sense "It can travel without using liquid as a carrier"

Possibly airborne stricken monkeys closest to vent from pig air duct lasted up to 8 to 13 days without symptoms. Here is what I found more troubling....

All animals were euthanized when signs became apparent (symptomatic). The pigs were infected first and were euthanized 12 to 14 days after inoculation. A pair of non-inoculated monkeys were euthanized 8 and 13 days after first exposed to pigs by air vent alone.

Without more data, it appears the pigs spread the disease prior to becoming symptomatic.

Well, Nature report is just that: a report (not the Bible). Today they say that Ebola is not airborne... but they can't aseverate it categorically, hence the extra safety preventions under controlled environment ("astronaut" dresses, negative atmosphere, etc)
