People are still talking about there being '20,000 infected and the outbreak may last until next year before it is defeated' and similar things. Seriously? How retarded do you have to be to not see the writing on the wall. This virus, with its 21 day incubation, it spreading totally unchecked. We know from specific cases in Sierra Leone, Liberia and Nigeria, that this virus is extremely contagious - far more contagious than we were led to believe. Many experts also now think it is infectious during the incubation (maybe not AS infectious as when symptoms develop, but certainly infectious). So, for us to be in a situation where there AREN'T millions of infected very soon, we need to believe that either the infected simply won't pass it on at anywhere even remotely near the rate they have been proven to be already, or we need to believe that the authorities can somehow isolate every infected person within hours of them catching the virus. However, there are multiple strains of Ebola, so I think it would be like the seasonal flu in the sense that immunity to one may not protect you from another. I have a serious hunch, with the way this thing is spreading, that there are a lot of asymptomatic carriers out there - people who get infected but never show symptoms, but are nevertheless contagious. It would explain why it's spread the way it has. It's hard to say. I don't believe there's anyone out there taking blood samples of the presumed healthy and checking for antibodies. |
