Why does it seem that there are sects of Christianity the believe the more you cause yourself to suffer the more God will reward you?

As a child Christianity was forced on me and well as that sensibilty though stories about maryters and missionaries who sometimes are gone from the USA for most of their lifetime only coming home to raise money to go back and continue to live.

Eventually it occured to me that many seem to not notice opportunities to "help" here at home and that makes no sense.

Pure stupidity. Plain and simple.

You know, some times I find myself cheering for Darwin.

playing with fire and they just might get burnt.

hope we will not continue sending planes down to pick up people who knowingly take the risk of infecting themselves.

The missionaries probably won't take precautions either since they feel God has placed a hedge of protection around them and they feel invincible.

This story has so many elements wrong with it. My county is the 2nd most economically depressed in the state and people HERE NEED HELP!!!
