Dear Dr. El-Najjar,
Many thanks for publishing my World War Three Analysis today in Al-Jazeerah.info, where I've had the honor of seeing some of my best essays in the two years I've had the honor to know you. Allow me to post the link for those of my readers who may have missed it: [

I believe that the title of the essay was well-chosen, though I am far from happy with that. Today after its publication Israel -- and its Bush League enablers in the White House and US Media -- went far indeed in taking us as close to world war as we've been since the Cuban Missile Crisis. A few notes from my day, spent watching far more network news than I'd like, will sum up the matter.
As I opened my eyes this morning, turning on the TV to catch the latest war developments, I saw the George W. Bush leering from a German press conference as he promised a strong response to the failure of Iran to stand down its nuclear enrichment program. He was in a truculent mood, of the sort that I've seen him in when he was preparing to do mischief.
Shortly afterward, CNN was upsetting me even before I had finished my first cup of coffee, running a story about how the Washington D.C. police have taken unusual authoritarian steps "to protect the capitol" because they have suddenly determined that the capitol is suffering from a violent crime spree. CNN immediately brought up a picture of slain NY Times journalist David Rosenbaum, whose last article, published on Christmas Eve, 2005, pointed out that the Bush Supreme Court nominee, Justice Roberts, had a history that involved approving executive domestic spying. The NSA domestic spying was quite the sensitive matter then, and knowing observers didn't believe the official story that Mr. Rosenbaum had been fatally mugged by ruffians -- just two weeks after his offensive story ran in the Times. The CNN story was, I believe, meant to alert "do-gooders" in the nation's capitol (if there are any such left!) not to get conscientious in the "difficult days" ahead of us -- days in which I believe Israel will initiate a full-scale regional war in the Middle East, risking an all-out world war in the process.
A bit later in my morning I heard the Israel-first US media hammer home the propaganda line that Israel is operating in self defense as it invades Gaza and Lebanon, as they are "rescuing kidnap victims," "protecting Israel," "engaging in self-defense" or other such ex-pressions. It always turns my stomach when I know that the folks talking through the TV into my living room use the most sympathetic terms possible to describe Israel's captured soldiers, while they seldom mention my dead American comrades from Iraq and Afghanistan at all -- as to do so would deter our war willingness as we send our troops into the Quicksand War they helped the Bush League to lure us into. Israeli missiles, bombs and artillery shells are said to destroy military targets, and any mention of the dozens of civilian deaths in Gaza and Lebanon are omitted, even under the euphemistic term that used to be used of "collateral damage."
At lunch, the media was insisting that Lebanon was attacking Haifa, some 30 kilometers south of Lebanon, with two katusha rockets, and that the two had fallen in a Christian neighborhood. This was of interest to me because the range of the katusha is generally held to be less than the distance from the border to the target; the odds were against two of them hitting their mark, even if they had the range, so inaccurate are they at maximum range; the odds were against them hitting minority Christian turf inside a Jewish town. The whole thing made me think of the phrase that has become common since 911: "false flag," meaning that someone blows someone up and says that another person did it. In this case I couldn't help but wonder whether Jews were attacking Christians and blaming it on Muslims.
By afternoon I was hearing the talking television heads glibly describe the Israeli concerns that, come to think of it, Gaza and Lebanon were really just puppets for Syria and Iran, after all! From there I saw a a rapid transition to John Bolton, our Jewish UN ambassador (though it's anti-Semitic to mention that this most important diplomat is Jewish). Mr. Bolton demonstrated that Time Magazine was wrong in saying "cowboy diplomacy" was dead by vetoing a Security Council resolution trying to curb the Israeli aggression against Gaza -- and will no doubt do the same tomorrow if the rest of the world is so absurd as to suggest that the Israeli aggression against Lebanon is a bit over-reactive!
By evening Wolf Blitzer, a CNN Jewish newsman with a TV name right out of the Third Reich, hinted that World War Three might be in full swing this weekend -- hence the title of this brief essay, and that Syria and Iran might be next in line for Israel's peculiar self-defense efforts. I have the uncomfortable feeling that "Wolf," for all his huffing and puffing most of the time, may just be right this time. Israel is in real danger of losing its ability to control the political spectrum of Washington, D.C., as a Democratic victory in the November elections would bring about exactly the kind of internecine struggle -- Democratic Legislative Branch against Republican Executive Branch -- that the American Founding Fathers saw as the root of our republic. This reversion to inconvenient constitutional principles would, of course, get in the way of the emerging empire of the "Post-911 Reality." A regional war would be an excellent way to forestall this development by reinforcing the danger felt by the average American. Our citizens are almost forgetting to be fearful, and are therefore becoming grumbling, unwilling participants in the ruinous terror war -- and if a world war results from the regional war, well, c'est la vie!
As I prepare for sleep (which will be fitful), I fear that I shall dream of false-flag attacks, which would increase the American paranoia -- and hatred for Muslims -- yet more, as they did on 911. I shall dream of the smoldering ruins of the World Trade Center, the most successful building demolition of all time, which destroyed two towers and a two-centuries-old constitution in one September day. I shall dream of the USS Liberty, which Israeli aircraft attacked for half a day in 1967, in an attempt to kill my US comrades in arms and blame it all on the "Muslim Monsters" of that time, the Egyptians -- and thereby pull my nation like a dull-witted golem into a world war. Turning to God as a last resort (as, God knows, we all do), I shall finally pray against such dreams -- and such futurities.
