Why would a cop ask me for my Social Security Number?

I live in NJ and my license number is not my SS number. I feel like an idiot now for giving him that information..

Do you think I should call the police station and ask them why they would need that info? I am a little irked right now.

My husband is a cop, and he says that if you have a common name with someone who is wanted, a social security number will be asked to make sure you are not the person who is wanted

I WAS REPORTING A CRIME. I WAS THE VICTIM. I don't know about that last answer even theough I thank you for your response. I guess we are all criminals in their eyes? Or is there soemthing else going on? And of course they did not even catch the guy he attacked my car.. jsut sat there getting my information.

Long story short, some guy kicked my car at a stoplight this morning. trying to be level headed and not esculate the violence I stayed in my car and called the police. I the officer met me at a nearby location where I parked my car and took down my report. However one of the things he asked me was for my social security number.. Atthe time I was shaken and my nerves were rattled.. but now that I am calmer and looking back I fail to see any reason for an officer to ask me such a question.

well if you cant trust the police, then don't call them when you need help. they certaintly have more important things to do with their time than fighting with you over your ss #

As far as "them" getting your personal information, forget it. That battle has been lost. If the cop wanted your info for nefarious purposes, he could get everything he wanted simply by getting your license plate number.

So he wanted your SSN? Weird, but I wouldn't worry about it. If he wants to do you harm he could do it anyway. Best to not upset them or they'll beat you to a pulp and simply say you were belligerent and resisted arrest. You can't win when you deal with the police. Sad but true.
