Anonymous Coward User ID: 116854 United States 07/14/2006 04:04 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I live in NJ and my license number is not my SS number. I feel like an idiot now for giving him that information.. Quoting: Amazed 83654Do you think I should call the police station and ask them why they would need that info? I am a little irked right now. Get ID theft insurance. I'm sure they do not protect the SS number on the police report all that well. So now all and ID theft perp needs is that report to take out loans in your name. Because a police report generally contains: 1) Your legal name 2) Your Drivers License Number 3) Your Address 4) Possibly Your signature 5) NEVER PUT YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER DOWN in and unsecured form like a police report with all these other items easily available. 6) YOUR PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION 7) ETC ETC Watch your credit reports closely. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 116854 United States 07/14/2006 04:06 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | My husband is a cop, and he says that if you have a common name with someone who is wanted, a social security number will be asked to make sure you are not the person who is wanted Quoting: Anonymous Coward 116975Then you barter. If they can prove they have a wanted warrant for your name easily you will give them your social so you will both not be delayed. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 116854 United States 07/14/2006 04:06 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I WAS REPORTING A CRIME. I WAS THE VICTIM. I don't know about that last answer even theough I thank you for your response. I guess we are all criminals in their eyes? Or is there soemthing else going on? And of course they did not even catch the guy he attacked my car.. jsut sat there getting my information. Quoting: Amazed 83654Welcome to the Red / Blue lists. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 105082 United States 07/14/2006 04:08 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Long story short, some guy kicked my car at a stoplight this morning. trying to be level headed and not esculate the violence I stayed in my car and called the police. I the officer met me at a nearby location where I parked my car and took down my report. However one of the things he asked me was for my social security number.. Atthe time I was shaken and my nerves were rattled.. but now that I am calmer and looking back I fail to see any reason for an officer to ask me such a question. Quoting: Amazed 83654You were filling out a police complaint. The cop is required by law to get your SS# for the police report. They can get it off you DL info but a lot of cops ask for it so they don't have to run your license. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 5804 United States 07/14/2006 04:17 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | As far as "them" getting your personal information, forget it. That battle has been lost. If the cop wanted your info for nefarious purposes, he could get everything he wanted simply by getting your license plate number. So he wanted your SSN? Weird, but I wouldn't worry about it. If he wants to do you harm he could do it anyway. Best to not upset them or they'll beat you to a pulp and simply say you were belligerent and resisted arrest. You can't win when you deal with the police. Sad but true. |

But asked me a lot of persoanl questions that had nothing to do with the actaul crime. As far as I know I am one of the citzens who pays these pigs thier paychecks and they are suppose to serve and protect me.. not load a database full of my persoanl information. |

I don't like the idea of giving my "papers" to the police. Not at all. It's just that the easier thing to do would have been to give the cop your SSN. I would have. It's not like they can't get it anyway and if you refused it might have caused a confrontation with the police officer - and you don't want or need that. Sadly, the US is on the brink of becoming a total Police State. And the citizens, of course, are just rolling over and accepting it. Whatcha gonna do? /shrug Peace to you. |
