TEPCO Drops Bombshell About Sea Releases; 8 Billion Bq Per Day

August 26th, 2014

TEPCO made the startling admission today at a press conference that the plant is leaking 8 billion bequerels per day. (8 gigabequerels)
5 billion bq of strontium 90
2 billion bq of cesium 137
1 billion bq of tritium

This is the ongoing daily release to the Pacific. These release numbers are also within the realm of what some oceanographers have been warning about since last year, that there was an ongoing and considerable leak to the sea. According to journalist Ryuichi Kino TEPCO said this may be due to failings of some sort within the “glass” wall at the sea front. This is an underground wall made in the soil by injecting a solidifying agent to block water flow.

This daily release would add up to 11,680,000,000,000 = 11 terabequerels over 4 years time in addition to the initial sea releases during the meltdowns.

*** Update*** With a translation of a related portion of a TEPCO document released to METI just yesterday the total releases of this new admission are even higher than the 11 Tbq mentioned. The chart that can be seen here, shows the releases until 2014 were considerably higher. Releases dropped in 2014, likely due to work underway to try to block leaking water. TEPCO also has a section of where they think they will get once remediation work is finished that is lower yet, but that is not achieved yet based on the TEPCO document. This drastically changes the estimated releases to the sea in total. We came up with a rough estimate of about 673 Tbq for 3 years at the 2013 rate, this would be in addition to any initial sea releases during the meltdowns.

The admission was extracted by journalists that continued to press TEPCO for an answer.

0:30 in — Masao Yoshida, Manager at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant on 3/11: “Head office, head office, a very serious situation is occurring. The Number 3 reactor building has exploded, probably a steam blast.”

1:00 in — NHK: Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant entered the critical phase on Mar. 11, 2011. Officials at the plant noticed late in the afternoon that the emergency cooling system was not working, but Yoshida wasn’t informed until late that night and the reactors had already started melting down. Yoshida: “I’m very regretful about this, we failed to establish a system to receive warnings from employees on time.”

1:45 in — NHK: The following day Yoshida decided to inject seawater into the crippled No. 1 reactor to cool it down. TEPCO officials wanted to suspend the plan as they had yet to gain approval from the prime minister but the Yoshida defied that order. Yoshida: “I remember vividly TEPCO officials told me over the phone to stop right away, no arguments. 2:45 in — NHK: After radiation around the plant increased TEPCO, head office stopped delivering equipment — instead they dropped it off at the facility 50 kilometers away. Yoshida: “I had to dispatch workers to get those things I thought please do not disturb us with all this at this very crucial time.”

3:30 in — NHK: The government plans to disclose almost all of Yoshida’s interviews as early as next month the recourse should be closely examined.

Radionuclides in fishes and mussels from the Farallon Islands Nuclear Waste Dump Site, California.

The Farallon Islands Nuclear Waste Dump Site (FINWDS), approximately 30 miles west of San Francisco, California, received at least 500 TBq encapsulated in more than 47,500 containers from approximately 1945 to 1970.

During several seasons in 1986/87 deep-sea bottom feeding fishes (Dover sole = Microstomus pacificus; sablefish = Anoplopoma fimbria; thornyheads = Sebastolobus spp.) and intertidal mussels (Mytilus californianus) were collected from the vicinity of the FINWDS and from comparable depths at a reference site near Point Arena, CA.

Tissues were analyzed for several radionuclides (137Cs, 238Pu, 239+240Pu, and 241Am). Radionuclide concentrations for fish mussel tissue ranged from non-detectable to 4,340 mBq kg(-1) wet weight, with the following means for Farallon fishes: 137Cs = 1,110 mBq kg(-1); 238Pu = 390 mBq kg(-1); 239+240Pu = 130 mBq kg(-1); and 241Am = 1,350 mBq kg(-1). There were no statistically significant differences in the radionuclide concentrations observed

this is the problem, agreed.... there are always two ends of a spectrum, in this we see TEPCO at the Pro-Nuke and fear based reporting at the other end of the Anti-Nuke...

At both ends I can guarantee the authenticity and passion from reporters... however, TEPCO have a wholesale lock down on the real data, which leaves anti-nukers with the tougher job of filtering information from vast sources...

I even forwarded the Ladies report on the state of the oceans in so far as her neck of the woods to other anti-nuke groups.... the admins of which concurred with the synopsis that 'over reporting' on the facts hinders our global and collective credibility, the ladies report and facts from historical evidence seems legit....
