Had a talk with my grandfather yesterday about WW2.

My grandfather was a sniper during WW2. I never really knew much about what he went through, because I never bothered to ask him. I thought it might be disrespectful.

Well, I'm really close to my grandfather. This experience I think made us even closer. Yesterday the family got together and everyone was drinking. We stayed up playing cards, and eventually everyone was out. My grandpa and I were playing rummy and talking. For some reason we started talking politics, and I asked him what it was like before WW2.

He paused for a second, and I apologized but he started talking about it. He told me he's actually been terrified recently because of how similar times are now compared to pre-WW2. He told me that before WW2 nothing in the papers seemed real. Everything was an "informational war" tactic between the two parties for who would profit more from it. He told me about how quickly it seemed to happen on a historical timescale, but in real life. It was gradual. It wasn't even thought of as a world war until conflict with Japan. He told me he didn't want to talk about him killing people. He said he was ashamed of it. He thinks war is bullshit. He told me that the rich are who control the wars, and the only reason they don't kill us all off is because they need us for "production". He told me he lost his religion and sense of the world soon after it.

I had to tell someone, it was the most chilling feeling hearing this from him.
