Quoting: Anonymous Coward 61907640 plz the short version! Good eruption not as bad ash cloud as the hard to pronounce one in 2010 I believe I haven't been at this very long, but I've seen statements like that several times in the thread. I've also seen that this volcano is significantly bigger than Eyja-whatever. If it's that much bigger, why would the eruption be assumed to be smaller than 2010? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 61907640 plz the short version! The worst-case scenario is that this is the start of a major volcano-tectonic event at Bárðarbunga, which may further develop to the southwest. This is a concern because in the southwest there are fissures that have produced Iceland’s most voluminous lava flows since the ice melted some 9,000 years ago. These fissures are up to 100 km (62 miles) long, and far to the southwest they can trigger eruptions at the Torfajökull volcano. Torfajökull happens to have an abundance of sticky magma that can erupt explosively and produce lots of fine ash. The last eruption, in 1477-1480, produced just two lava flows and minor explosions. But the one before, in about 874 CE, produced an explosive eruption plume that was carried over much of Iceland. |

Until we get official confirmation of this, he’s assembled a comprehensive list of ways to track the volcano. Rehnberg’s (unofficial and admittedly unlikely) worst-case scenario is frightening: “Forget flying for half a year.” His disclaimer? “What I write are just the musings from someone who has read everything ever published on Icelandic volcanism. A lot of what is happening is in unknown territory.” John 8:32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. |

Sorry if it's already been posted. [link to en.wikipedia.org] 870 and 1480 Many large eruptions have occurred south-west of the glacier, of which two have been since human settlement of Iceland: the Vatnaöldur eruption about 870 and the Veiðivötn eruption in 1480. Both were very large eruptions that would have had major effects on life in Iceland and neighbouring countries. John 8:32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. |

Sorry, but I couldn't find who asked. So these links are for everyone. They are composite almost real time satellite images processed to enhance Dust and Ash clouds. You'll definitely see it, once it all goes up. I suggest monitoring these images 24/7 as I do.
