when anything extremely hot meets water like a hot chip pan or lava its going to be explosive.

2) if an asteroid hits the Earth its the shockwaves from the impact that could trigger volcanic events worldwide. A volcanic explosion does not create shockwaves at the magnitude an asteroid hitting the Earth would cause.

Bárðarbunga is still roaring

About 950 earthquakes have been detected with the earthquake monitoring network of the Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO) since midnight. Several of these events were larger than magnitude 3. The swarm initially started in the Bárðarbunga caldera and has been migrating in two clusters towards the north and the east of the volcano.

Yesterday, these two clusters were active east and north of Bárðarbunga as activity was migrating northeastwards. While strongest events were located in the northern cluster, the highest number of events were detected in the eastern cluster.

Disruption to Air Traffic Could be Significant

A volcanic eruption in Bárðarbunga could have a great an impact on air travel as the 2010 Eyjafjallajökull eruption did, according to Friðþór Eydal, a spokesperson for ISAVIA, the company which operates airports in Iceland.

Friðþór says that a lot was learnt from the Eyjafjallajökull eruption and extensive research was conducted but changes have not yet been made to safety procedures. “There isn’t much we can do but direct air traffic away from the danger zone if a large eruption occurs like the one we saw in Eyjafjallajökull,” he said.

Civil Aviation Authorities are monitoring the situation and a Code Orange was issued on Monday in light of increased likelihood of an eruption. Color codes, which are in accordance with recommended International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) procedures, are intended to inform the aviation sector about a volcano’s status.

An Eruption might Cause a Monumental Flood

In Iceland people wait the possible eruption of Bárðarbunga with a strange combination of excitement and anxiety. The earthquakes continued through Thursday morning, but there is no sign of magma making its way up to the surface. Scientists are cautious, because nobody wants to be the geologist who falsely predicted an eruption, but even so they seem to be leaning towards the opinion that probably the old volcano is waking up.

Dyngjuháls GPS is still raising westwards at high speed, so far 115mm. The north motion has now stoped after 75mm. The westward motion shows no signs of abating

In one of the two models for a rifting fissure eruption it is suspected that prior to the start of the eruption a thinning of the crust will occur as the plates are pulled appart, that would in turn induce the massive decompression melt needed in the next stage.
So, I would be more worried about a rapid deflation than a rapid inflation since I think that theory has merrit.

Isn’t there a deflation showing on all 4 stations? Not major but it seems there is a new downward trend?
