I can't keep from thinking that the last part of this ripping apart is now taking place before our very eyes. Quoting: Cow Anonymous Let's hope not. I pray that you are dead wrong as we all know what that would mean for not only iceland but for the entire planet. The amount of magma that is below the surface of Iceland right now is staggering. It took the Laki event 8 months to end and although it is considered the 2nd greatest tragedy in human history it did come to and end....and that is what he hope for here. |

Maybe it will be a non-issue but I sincerely doubt it and we need to understand the threat it may pose. Quoting: Godwithin Need sleep as tomorrow I am going to clean up my Mom's garden for her 83rd birthday present. Keep up the watch on Miss Barda. Things feel a bit too quiet tonight compared to last night. Yes, also very thankful for the night shift too. Lots of info to assimilate! Yes, is saw that, but I don't think it is correct. As far as I know, the rim of the caldera is higher than the icy surface of the caldera itself, on which the GPS unit is stationed. Not sure what the height difference is, but I'm sure the original "starting point" of the caldera is not 2009 meters. As you know some say that a drop of 45 meters would be enough to make the caldera collapse. So a drop of more than 100 meters would have been disastrous already. My two eurocents ;-) I did notice that the 111m drop was quite excessive...We will have to ask him about that. It is astounding how Bard continues to take these huge quakes day after day. It is absolutely astounding. well, if you look at this link from the experts, Ruv, you'll see the dotted shaded line does indeed top out at around 2000 metres, so... [link to www.ruv.is] you'll also see that they seem to expect around a 600 metre drop, which will push the bottom of the caldera at least half way into the magma chamber. I just did a graphic illustrating where we're at now, approximately, with where they EXPECT us to end up.. [link to cdn.makeagif.com] |

Quoting: Cow Anonymous @ AC..398 Yes, that's clear. If that's the case the 45 meter theory does not hold. At all :) yeah. another thing too, IF that graphic is correct, and it does seem that's what they think, the caldera will empty HALF of the magma chamber at least, through the dyke that's about 120 cubic KM, if it does hold about 235 KM3 i think this explains the increasing force of the eruption. every cm that caldera drops is putting more and more extreme pressure on the chamber, and pushing ever increasing amounts of magma out we're all watching barda, it's the actual eruption and it's intensity we should be watching. have you noticed it seems to be increasing in intensity all the time? we're having clouds of s02 floating around already, and it hasn't even got going properly yet. |
