Quoting: Gugazine That is of course....without ....any new fissures or eruptions! Check out this news headline. Vulcanologist says eruption at Bard is now more likely than ever. But a thought ( quite possibly a silly thought) just entered my head regarding drinking water. If this event continues and worsens, what effect will the S02 have on drinking water?? When SO2 in the atmosphere mixes with water, we get acid rain yes?? is this likely to effect drinking water from the reservoirs??? Quoting: koevtsibird MM and indeed others, thoughts please When So2 enters the Troposphere and mixes with H20 it will turn into Sulfuric Acid. This is what caused so much damage and death to vegetation and livestock during the Laki event as they ate the grass etc. that contained rainfilled Sulfuric Acid. The best thing to do is to get very good filters that will take out 99.9% of the impurities including sulfuric acid and this way you will still be abe to use any water from lakes etc. Time to rest!! See you tonight my friend! |

However, if the caldera starts dropping faster, or the eruption in Holuhraun subsides, then the magma will likely find another way to the surface, he reasoned. Volcanologist Ármann Höskuldsson told eyjan.is yesterday that he believes the current activity will lead to a sub-glacial eruption because there is much more magma underground than is currently being emitted at Holuhraun. The caldera subsidence also indicates a sub-glacial eruption, although it is impossible to predict when it would start, he added. According to Magnús Tumi, it is unusual that an eruption remains stable for such a long time. The Holuhraun eruption has now lasted three weeks and one has to go all the way back to the 1963-1967 eruption which created Surtsey island to find a comparable eruption. The new lava in Holuhraun now covers 37 square km (16 square miles) and would cover most of Iceland’s capital. Well if magma stays under barda and it gets pressure off another way like holoraun nothing to worry but if that magma under barda and clacier erupts under clacier there is possibility caldera collapse and it is something to worry. |
