K9 Cop - 6 Hours in Police Car - Dies.

When anyone else kills a canine cop, they get punished as if the dog were a human officer.

Now, the dog is just a dog.

It's unfortunate, but mistakes happen. The officer may have had a lot on his mind that day, and just lost track of time. And I'm sure he must feel horrible about it. Thoughts and prayers go out to him ...

Officer Miller was accompanied by officer Jake Bigelow who was training under officer Miller that day. The affidavit outlines Miller's recollection of the events. Miller says he yelled at Bigelow for not leaving the air conditioner on..

WTF? ^^^Miller yells at officer who was in training for not leaving the air on???

So that would mean, the trainee would have been the driver and should have left the car running for 6 hours instead of taking the dog into the station with them?

To the poster who said we should feel bad for the cop....FUCK that...

He is placing blame where it should not be and apparently, should not have even had access to an animal if he cannot take better care of it than that..
The dog was HIS responsibility..he knew the car was not running for SIX hours

Shouldn't he be tried for negligent homicide of an officer?

I mean, citizens get shot for brandishing knives at officer dogs, much less actually killing them.

He deserves 10 years minimum in prison. Loss of all pension and benefits and never allowed to own animals again, ever.

So who is to say it wasn't "intentional" that would make it a felony there. I am pretty sure I could argue the case that it WAS intentional, but I won't do it on here, too tired today.

(n) A person commits a felony if he commits aggravated cruelty to animals as defined in subsection (c) of this section or knowingly and with intent to cause death, injury or undue suffering, cruelly beats, tortures, torments, injures or mutilates an animal resulting in the death or required euthanasia of the animal. A felony under this subsection or subsection (c) of this section is punishable by not more than two (2) years imprisonment, a fine of not more than five thousand dollars ($5,000.00), or both.

animal cruelty? If someone else kills a police dog, they call the dog an "officer" and charge them with murder.

I will attempt to start to argue that it was intentional. First, the K-9 Officers almost always have the dogs live with them so they are around the dog 24/7, they are closer than even spouses...

This guys really needs to get the felony charge.. I am too sick (not because of this just sick today) to post more but I have more to say. Will save it for another day when I'm feeling better.

He killed his very expensive canine, bought and paid for with tax payer dollars. His actions are completely negligent with utter incompetence and foolishness. The cop is an idiot.

Expensive, I live a few miles from a person that trains them they are brilliant.

Totally agree, the dog should have been brought into the station and allowed to have water and relax.

I thought killing a police dog was the same as killing a cop.
If a mother kills her kid in the car by cooking them its manslaughter.

It is if they are shot, killed in the line of duty based on several circumstances.

But not sure what laws are on the books for this, probably pretty rare, that's why posted it.

It would probably fall as previous said under local law, state law on animal cruelty.

Doesn't matter to me it is negligence of an amazing animal. I have never heard of this happening to a K9. Should be charged with something severe.

This should set a precedent that if a civilian kills a police dog it can only be charged as a misdemeanor.

He sounds unfit to be a cop.

I have heard of this happening before, seems like there's at least one incident in the news every summer.

The first one I heard about was a female cop who came off duty early morning after all night shift with the K-9, went into the house and went to bed, left the canine in her police car parked in the driveway. When she came back out to the car later that afternoon, the dog of course was dead. And glad to say, she was immediately fired from the force.
