During the Korean War, the US dropped a greater tonnage of bombs on North Korea than were used in the entire Pacific theater in WWII. An estimated 99% of all North Korean urban infrastructure was wiped out. About 3 million Koreans, mostly civilians, died in the bombing.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 62211486

I personally know a retired air force pilot that flew large bombers over North Korea during the Korean War. He has told me that on many occasions he flew sorties over North Korea carrying nuclear warheads and while none were used it came very close on several occasions that orders to retract and not complete the missions were given with one mission he recalls precisely that it came down to only 10 minutes before they reached their target that they were ordered to return without delivering their payload.

We came so close to using nuclear weapons in Korea and very few people know just how close we really were. This man is an honest and simple older retired man whom I have no reason to not believe him, yet many years went by and just believed he might have been exaggerating such but more recently it has been published proving what he told me was true.

Ghandi's political power pevented his arrest for child molestation, he slept with naked underage girls every night to 'perserve his energy'

Mother Theresa built hospices so she could surround herself with suffering and get donations from dictators, her closest friend was Charles Taylor.

Winston Churchill's job before becoming Prime Minister was in the army where he misread a map and sent tens of thousands of people to their death at Gallipoli because he didnt realise the beaches had cliffs.

eastern tennessee was pro union during the civil war. they even tried to withdraw from tennessee and form a separate state but the governor of TN sent 3000 confederate soldiers and had the separatists arrested. a military campaign to liberate east tn was formulated but never executed by union military leaders. after the civil war ended Lincoln Memorial University was built in harrogate, tn as a thank you to the people of east tn for their loyalty to the United States. the university was supposed to be for common people to be able to continue their education but that plan was an utter failure as tuition to the university sky rocketed(causing me to have to leave the university 2 years away from my degree).

im sorry if you are from here in east tn and reading this and it has shocked your view of this areas participation in that little dust up. but its all true. look it up. my great great grandfather served in a union reg out of tazewell.

Yes - there is a CONTRACT with indentured servants - many of whom were Irish too.

The problem was most contracts lasted 7 years and most of the indentured servants only lived FIVE YEARS - so it was basically for life...

(and boy do I wish I had the reference for that - it was on someone's thread here last year)

On August 22, 1944, at between 10:00 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. local time, the USS Bowfin attacked the convoy in which the Tsushima Maru was sailing and sank her, close to the island of Akusekijima.[2][3] There were 1,484 civilians on board, including 826 schoolchildren (of which 767 were killed and 59 survived the sinking).

The ship was part of Convoy Namo 103, which consisted of the following ships:[3]

Tsushima Maru (passenger / cargo vessel)
Kazuura Maru (listed as Waura Maru in some sources, assumed to be a cargo vessel)
Gyōkū Maru (cargo vessel)
Destroyer Hasu (Momi class)
Gunboat Uji
The crew of the USS Bowfin would not discover until 20 years later that the passenger-cargo vessel was transporting children.[3]

Its wreck was located and identified in December 1997.

Civil War guerrilla Captain William T "Bloody Bill" Anderson was not killed during an ambush by Maj Cox Union forces in 1864.

He was on the horse that got away.

In a 1924 newspaper interview, Brownwood TX resident Colonel Wm "Uncle Billy" Anderson claimed to be the infamous guerrilla. That story was debunked in 2012 by Sally Anderson, a descendant of Brownwood's beloved "Uncle Billy". If the above theory is still being perpetuated today it is being done in error, or for some other unknown reason.

The real Bloody Bill Anderson had hundreds of stitches on his face due to cosmetic surgery used to disguise his appearance.

Not just that!

The legend of the confederate gold!

Several soldiers from here in Eastern TN, fought for both Union and Confederacy, and used the uniforms to ambush a confederate safe house in GA.

legends abound where the gold actually went outside of Augusta GA, but one of the theories is that it's somewhere in east tn.

Another interesting one I remembered...

When the Ukrainian Kulaks were being attacked and their farms were being taken away, many of them LITERALLY believed that Satan and an antichrist were involved.

Additionally, even though many of Kulaks were illiterate, they sent hundreds, if not thousands of letters to government officials complaining about abuse of lower government officials. Even though they felt and saw the evil happening around them, they still believed in the rule of law and maintained a basic sense of righteousness.

Re: Share an interesting historic fact that you think few people know
Mao's "Great Leap Forward" agricultural program created what is probably the worst famine in history, with estimated death tolls rangin from 30-50 million. But even though the whole country was starving, hardly anyone realized it. This is because the centrally controlled press kept pumping out bullshit about "record harvests" and how well everyone was doing. There was very little communication between people different areas of the country, so everyone assumed the poor conditions in their area were exceptional & everyone else was doing fine. Even the top leadership didn't grasp the scale of the problem because middle-level leadership routinely falsified reports to look better. It was several years before the scope of the disaster set in.

There are lessons there for us today about how effectively mass media can cover up even the worst economic news.

Many believed the Muslim Ottoman empire, was an example of how Muslims could co-exist with other religions, but this is false.

The Ottoman empire would regularly kidnap children, including Christian boys and force them to convert to Islam:

The Colossus of Rhodes was built from the sale and reuse of siege equipment and weapons left behind. The siege lasted a year 305BC to 304BC. It was broken after a relief army had been sent by Ptolemy.

The Colossus stood close to 30 meters tall.
