I personally think any state should be permitted secession if the majority chooses that. Sovereignty for all!

At some point the United States may vote to
kick some of the taker states out.
States that cost more than they are worth.

Some states are givers and some are takers and they
are not what most people think.
Like the Red and Orange states here are a HUGE drain
on the nation.

Or states could kick out some of the deadbeat counties.
Here's Washington states "givers and taker" counties.
Look at all those republican taker counties here.

Re: So Texas can't leave, but this one state can? Obama wants to unilaterally allow Hawaii to secede
There were 3 main reasons the US invaded Hawaii.

1 - the US was gearing up for the Spanish American War and desperately needed Pearl Harbor. While they already had a treaty with the Kingdom of Hawaii, it was due to expire and they felt they couldn't take the chance of it not being renewed.

2 - in order to raise money after the Civil War, the US began an import tax on Hawaiian sugar. This didn't sit well with the missionary plantation owners. If Hawaii was a territory of the US however, they would pay no import tax.

3 - at the time of the overthrow, the Kingdom of Hawaii was the most educated nation on earth - aprx. 90% literacy rate, as well as being a leader in technology with indoor plumbing and electricity in the Ioloni Palace long before wither the White House or Buckingham Palace. It was also one of the most solvent nations on earth. After the Civil war, the US was broke and approached the Kingdom for a loan. But, their terms were such that Hawaii would not be repaid for at least 1000 years. Of course Hawaii said no way! One of the very first things the US did after invading Hawaii and locking up the Queen was to raid the treasury.

Good history lesson!
Thanks Rev Woo-Woo.
(I have 2 cousins who were born in HI before 1959 as Airforce brats - would that make them natives? - just curious)
Gen. John B Gordon and Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest were the finest citizen-soldiers birthed in America.

2005 data tho.
But at that time, the top deadbeat taker states were:
New Mexico
Mississippi
Alaska
Louisiana
West Virginia
North Dakota
Alabama
South Dakota
Kentucky

I wonder who would end up annexing it, Japan or China??
 Quoting: chuckles45

China. Probably part of some secret deal he worked out with them when he was over there last.

Next he will be undoing the purchase of Alaska and giving it back to the Russians.
 Quoting: Spiritmyst

That will be followed by giving California back to Mexico.

I am waiting for the goddess Rev woo from Hawaii to comment. She was looking into this kind of stuff at one time~

LOL!

I must say that the article writer is very missinformed

Number one, it's not secession in Hawaii's case, it's a return to sovereignty. Hawaii's government was never dissolved when the US invaded.

Also, though I detest Ovomit, this goes back to 1993 and Clinton signing the Apology Bill into law.

The overthrow of Hawaii was in complete violation of international law as was the annexation. The issue also was definitely not settled in 1959 as the plebiscite presented to the Hawaiian people was in violation of US law. They were only asked if Hawaii should remain a territory or become a state when they also, by US law, have been given the option to return to sovereignty.

Queen Luikiolani was right the US was wrong.....You do not take what is not given freely, being a good host should be reciprocated by acting as the least worthy member of the family.
