Wolf-Rayet Stars :)
This is some great information on Wolf-Rayet stars and goes into the physics of said stars.

*let me say I'm not an expert on this stuff, so if I cannot answer a question I will simply say "I do not know"...maybe some theoretical astrophysicist will show up to provide their input and theories :)

WR 104: Technical Questions

This page is for a more in-depth technical discussion of the risk posed by WR 104. There is jargon and techincal stuff ahead, and I won't try to explain all the terms. Ask your local friendly Astronomer if in doubt.

This discussion focusses on the risk to earth from a potential future gamma ray burst (GRB) in WR 104. Note that this was not a big part of my scientific article published in Astrophysical Journal. The article only had a paragraph or two about this scenario. But for understandable reasons, the press and public have picked up on this aspect of the work. It is maybe a little more widely relevant than, say, "radiative braking in colliding-wind systems" (which is discussed at length in the paper).

Furthermore let me add that any discussion of the future behavior of this complicated star system by necessity covers quite a lot of difficult astronomical terrain. I am in no way an expert in all the aspects one needs to cover to see the argument through. So I invite anyone reading this who sees a hole in my logic, or can add insight or detail to the discussion to get in touch and let me know what I have mistaken or missed.

The chain of logic from the observations through to a plausible credible future threat to Earth's biosphere has a lot of steps, and I will try to go through each of them with a realistic discussion of what we (or rather I) know and don't know about each step.

These technologies are giving humanity its first ever window into the intimate lives of stars: how they are born and how they die, and perhaps most exciting of all, whether they are surrounded by their own families of exoplanets.

Thanks my friends...

Nice to see GLPers interested in this type of stuff...

I noticed at the bottom of Peter Tuthill's main page he speaks about research opportunities...I soo wish I would've continued my college education...I would probably give up all my material possessions and live in a hut, in the same clothes every day, with no hot water, just to be able to research this stuff :)

I have soo many theories floating around in my *brian* I need to communicate...

Please add to the discussion.

^^lol...I guess I'm referring to the 'discussion' in my head...

But when silicon fuses, it forms highly stable nuclei like iron that don't want to fuse any further. So, silicon burning is the end of the line. And it doesn't last long! For example, a star 25 times the mass of the Sun is expected to spend about 5 to 10 million years burning hydrogen, 0.5 to 1 million years burning helium, 500 to 1000 years burning carbon, 6 to 12 months burning oxygen... but just a day or so burning silicon!

I'm only about half way through this one...I will be back to edit post.

I'm really curious in your opinion...do you have an explanation for the 100 >Mev particles as seen on GOES?

Do you have a workable theory on giant planet formation from gravitational instability (likely caused by a Wolf-Rayet star colliding) instead of the antiquated core accretion theory?

Or are you just going to continue to say how crazy I am?

You may think I've forgotten about GRB030329 and Wolf-Rayet stars, but I haven't. This big digression was just to set the stage. I've sketched what stars of up to 25 solar masses will do, but remember, Wolf-Rayets are a lot bigger: they begin life at about 60 solar masses. And astronomy resembles opera in this way: the bigger the star, the more noise they make in their final scene. So, the stuff about supernovae was just to whet your appetite.

Re: Wolf-Rayet Stars :)
So, within 90 min, a 40-inch telescope at the Siding Spring Observatory in Australia was looking at this spot. So was a telescope in Japan. They saw the optical afterglow of the γ-ray burster and watched how its brightness changed with time. And within 24 hours, a spectrograph on a telescope in Chile made detailed readings of the spectrum, measuring the redshift (z = 0.1685) and thus the distance of the burst, and seeing signs of radioactive nickel - about 1/3 of a solar mass of the stuff, according to one estimate! Later, more telescopes probed the event in different ways.

Re: Wolf-Rayet Stars :)
The details of what was seen gave a lot of credence to the "hypernova" or "collapsar" model of γ-ray bursters, championed by Stan Woosley of U. C. Santa Cruz, among others. But much remains mysterious about γ-ray bursters. Nobody knows exactly how the energy from the jet gets turned into γ rays! And, the hypernova model only fits "long" γ-ray bursters, where the burst lasts about 2 seconds or more. There are also "short" ones, which may work some other way.

I really, really, want to talk about this...

I think I have a model that can show how we can tell...although I know the 'experts' already have models...guess I want to communicate my ideas with someone :(

Globular clusters are gravitationally bound concentrations of ancient stars (up to a million such stars) which form a nearly spherical system. They orbit the galactic center along highly elliptical paths, and on average one revolution takes 300 million years. Recent estimates indicate that about 150 globulars exist in the Milky Way (the Andromeda Galaxy has been estimated to contain approximately 500 globular clusters).

^^THIS talks about Charles Messier and his discovery on planet formation due to gravitational instability.

IMO, Saturn was our old star when we humans inhabited Mars...this was waay before we through the \Z/ last time :)

IE: before our current star was born.

Hey OP thanks for this post. I just got out of my AST 102 class and we just went over WR stars!

interesting stars they are. So rare. The nuclear fusion overpowers gravity and the star burps out large quantities of mass.

I understand that these class O stars are so large, they will create a hypernova, which is much larger than a supernova and a black hole will be the remainder of such an explosion.

Hmm... I find it curious that I just learned about this today and my go to place glp has it too
