Let's see what the King James Bible says about your first sentence. 2 Timothy 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. If you are not reading the King James Bible, then you are not studying it, which means that you are unable to "rightly dividing" it. Rightly dividing means to put Scripture into it's proper perspective.
