The Israeli Lebanon Water Wars
If the water resources in your country are rapidly decreasing, and the neighbouring country has an intact water supply... and if you think that in the future you will need the other countries water supply... then you will not attack that country saying you need their water. If you attack that country you will do so for another reason, hiding your real objective behind a wall of deception and lies. Israel has always had water problems. Today, in 2006, Israel lives with increasing water shortages and a rapidly decreasing supply of fresh water. The river Jordan may run dry within the next two years, because of the vast amount of water being drawn from the river by the people living in the area. People cannot survive without water, towns and cities cannot survive without water, past civilisations have died out as water became scarce. You cannot grow crops without water, which means you cannot store food. Water is the life blood of a nation.

They can be used beneficially in the country much further south." He concluded the Litani was "essential to the future of the Jewish national home.'" Yet the British and French mandate powers kept the Litani entirely in Lebanon.(40)

Some in Israel believe that Lebanon has relatively more water than Israel does and does not need or use all of its water. Yet it is because Israel is occupying part of the land containing the Litani that Lebanon cannot use it. In response, Fouad Bizri, former minister and adviser to the Lebanese president, asserts that "Lebanon needs all its water...studies prove that there is more land to irrigate than there is water in the Litani basin."(42)
For instance, there is a lack of domestic running water for 22 villages immediately north of the springs where the Litani rises, in the province of Biqa'a. In the south, there are 36 villages which lack domestic running water. It is easy to see that if Lebanon gave Israel the waters of the Litani, opposition from antigovernment forces, especially the fundamentalist movement, would be strengthened, and there would be continued instability in Lebanon.(43) For instance, if Lebanon gave the Litani to Israel and denied the Shia Muslims, who are predominate in the area, use of the water for agriculture and domestic purposes, they would be increasingly frustrated with the Lebanese government. An example of this is that in 1974 there were rumors that water from the Litani were being diverted to Beirut to meet predicted shortages, which caused large anti-governmental demonstrations.(44)

as i was saying.
actually.
israel has always needed lebanon's water.
israel was created out of desert and created gardens (not normal to the area) and taken and still take tons of water.
israel doesn't need the oil.
the USA will go into iran and syria and gather the oil (they already militarily "own" 90% of the mideast oil) and israel will take the water from lebanon.
cuz that's what israel said. |

The reason for this conflict is too many people and not enough resources. |

Indeed. Single minded as the vast majority of posts here. European posters like myself are amazed every single day by the state of ignorance attained by today's average American. No wonder the USA is falling and falling. Its citizens have been reduced to the state of mere passive consumers, with the deep ignorance that comes with that... |

READ this idiot:
The new Ashkelon seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) plant - the largest desalination plant of its kind in the world - commenced initial production in August 2005, less than 30 months after construction began. Initially running at around 30% to 40% capacity, it will ultimately provide an annual 100 million m³ of water, roughly 5% to 6% of Israel's total water needs or around 15% of the country's domestic consumer demand.

For Palestinians, however, it is disastrous, because it will annex much of the West Bank's water and fertile land to Israel.
Under Olmert's plan, Israel aims to keep the two main Palestinian West Bank aquifers: the lower Jordan River basin in the east, and the eastern mountain aquifer, trapped behind Israel's wall in the west. This will force Palestinians to depend on Israel for water, preserving the status quo, a dramatically unjust division of water resources.

MANY thanks, I was looking for that!
By 1990, 13 were added among them eight from the Middle East : Algeria, Israel/Palestine , Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates, and Yemen.
UN studies anticipate to add another 10 countries by the year 2025 seven of them are from the Middle east : Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Libya, Morocco, Oman and Syria. This mean that by the year 2025 some eighteen countries in this troublesome region will suffer from water shortages. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 117846 (OP) 7/18/2006 6:10 PM | | Re: **ISRAEL WANTS WATER??? | Quote | Few agreements have been reached about how the water should be shared; most of those agreements are seen as un-just: upstream countries believe that they should control the flow of the rivers, taking what they like, if they can get away with it. Example Turkey. Downstream, where the states are often more advanced and militarily stronger they have always challenged this assumption, like Egypt and Israel. It is a recipe for confrontation.

Anonymous Coward User ID: 117846 (OP) 7/18/2006 6:19 PM | | Re: **ISRAEL WANTS WATER??? | Quote | The presence of some 100 Israeli settlements (populated by over 100,000 Jews) on land occupied in the West Bank in 1967, is a thorny issue. Water is very much in the heart of the conflict. The 100,000 settlers are given ( 100 Million Cubic meter) almost as much water as the one million Palestinians who live in the region ( given 137 million cubic meter). This is a source of bitterness and a real obstacle for peace. `` All Israeli settlements have water, lawns and swimming pools, while dozens of Palestinian villages are with inadequate water supplies and suffer from water shortage'' said Abdel Rahman Tamimi a ground water expert with the Palestine Hydrology Group.
snip
Before the six day war, Israel controlled less than 10 Kilometre or 6.25 Miles only of the Yarmuk river, now it has a de-facto control that stops Syria and Jordan from diverting the headwaters if they chose to. A report was recently prepared by the Israeli Military warned Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin against pulling out of the Golan heights. Two reasons were given, first water security and second the army intelligence gathering operation.

Elias Salamah, professor of water resources at the University of Amman has warned, on several occasions, that, ``if the multilateral talks on water fail to bring about a fairer distribution of water, some time between 1995 and 2005 there is high probability that Israel, Jordan and the west bank will face such progressive worsening water shortages that there will be conflict.'
final paragraph:
Most alarming, and perhaps most telling, was an off-the-record comment by a leading politician about his country's water need. `` A time may well come,'' he said,`` we have to calculate whether a small swift war might be economically more rewarding than putting up with a drop in our water supplies.''.
