What Putin is trying to accomplish is delaying the disintegration of Russia and get better position for the bad times ahead. Soon enough the small generation born in the 90's will be of military age and Russia will have serious issues with manpower.

I think they're trying to reinvent their army before then to be smaller but more professional force unlike the Soviet army, but even now the level of spending is bordering on unsustainable. So this plan went out to toilet with the incompetent leadership as Putin has done his best to prevent any foreign investments and Russian economy is stalling. Catastrophe is almost inevitable.

I guess the aggressive posturing now is only to hold the country together. It seems that while the long term planning has always been the best asset of Russia, they either got badly outplayed by west in their own game, or it's the incompetence of Putin that has put these trends in motion.

In a way I understand why they propagated their war in Ukraine by playing on the divisions between East and West Ukraine, but this has only resulted in acceleration of the Russian decline. At the start of this year it almost seemed that Russia could emerge as a superpower as their population reversed it's decline, but now not so much.

Even the energy exports will lose meaning as a method of influence during the next decade as Russia is looked as untrustworthy partner by all and all nations are trying to increase the research of alternative energy sources and reduce their reliance on Russia.
