Two Russian fighters entered a US "air defense identification zone" two days ago and were intercepted by American F-22 jets near Alaska, military officers said Friday.

The incursion on Wednesday was followed by a second incident on Thursday involving two Russian long-range bombers, which flew into Canada's air defense identification zone (ADIZ), officers said.

Two Canadian F-18 fighter jets intercepted the bombers, which flew out of the area without incident, according to Major Jamie Humphries, a spokesman for the North American Aerospace Defense Command.

The Russian warplanes on Wednesday at no point entered US sovereign air space or Canadian air space, Humphries told AFP.

In Wednesday's encounter, the Russian fighters were accompanied by two refueling tankers and two long-range bombers, he said.

Although Russian aircraft have entered the zone previously it was "the first time in a long time" that fighter jets passed through the area, said a US defense official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The Russians are exercising their right to self defense.

Though I think they are stiring the shit, I would like to point out an ADIZ is still in international water/airspace, just a space we say we are gonna watch out for past our border. No laws or boundaries were broken and these instances are sort of common place. This is a big deal but what I find more of a big deal is the war drums being pounded in the media over these incidents.

That's okay, and when the US does it to other countries around the world?

They are simply testing the waters, and it even says in the article you posted that the ADIZ is there "To safeguard a country's air space, air defense identification zones extend beyond territorial air space and are designed as a buffer to give a government more time to respond to potentially hostile aircraft. But the zones do not fall under international treaties and are not regulated under international law."

to me the $64,000 ? is at what point do the russians have to decide to do a first strike with all they have being they appear to be falling behind both financially and militarily at some point in the future they wont be able to hence use it or loose its kind of like being in a texas holdem tournament you have to go all in at some point me thinks they are nearing that point

Ok, so two long range bombers drop their payload, which would combined be about 20 or so long range nuclear tipped cruise missiles.

Well that would be a pretty shitty plan, since a cruise missile would barely reach the continental US if at all fired from Alaska, so it would not work as a decapitation strike at our command and control.

At which point we would fire all 2,200 of our nuclear weapons at Russia, they would fire back, and the world would end.

They're just fuckin with us, nothing more, nothing less.

the Ruskies won't tip their hand by using their long range bombers & cruise missiles in the initial hit .... it'll be smuggled nuk bombs strategically planted and sub missiles launched at point blank range .... you'll see internet attacks off the scale and all kinds of 5th Column ground attacks & sabotage around the country ....

disrupt the command structure just long enough to get the Ruskie ICBMs in to take out the US threat .... the bombers will come in for mop up and secondary targets ....

the only US attack will be from the subs that are programmed to take independent action after failing to get higher command orders ...

It's a good thing those F-22 pilots didn't pass out, or the Russians would have laughed themselves silly.
