It isn't too difficult to imagine monkeys spitting at each other, and throwing their feces at one another, now is it? Nope, the monkeys were too far away to spit on each other or bombard each other with feces. Not to mention the HUNDREDS of trained healthcare workers who have recently contracted ebola after being lied to and told it wasn't airborne. It's disinformation to say that ebola requires direct contact. |

The virus is spread in liquid droplets and cannot survive in air. Which means the op is only partly correct, because it can travel in water, but can only live there for a short time In water, the Ebola virus would be deactivated in a matter of minutes. Even assuming that it could infect a large reservoir, or open water system, assuming that the source of infection is constant, it would degrade at a near-constant rate. However, this scenario is unlikely due to the nature of how the virus spreads. Ebola can persist for months in corpses, which is why it is important to bury bodies soon after death. But in theory, an infected corpse placed in a shallow or smaller contained body of water, such as a well, could potentially infect that water. Even then, the virus would still degrade quickly in the water, and the viral load of the entire system would eventually diminish as the corpse rots. However, to say that Ebola is generally viable in water and is transmissible on a large scale through water sources is misinformed. |

The ebola currently rampaging through Africa is a different strain that is somehow - amazingly - shockingly - infecting a whole bunch of people, on a scale that ebola has never approached before. Each person develops a different variant of the disease while it learns to propagate itself throughout the human host ever more effectively. How are all the experts in spacesuits getting it, ffs? Explain that. Are they all just that sloppy, or is the tiny virus penetrating their suits through the air? |

Anonymous Coward (OP) User ID: 59455165 United States 09/30/2014 06:04 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Depends on how you define "Airborne"..... Quoting: MulvaGippleDelores The virus IS found in the bodily fluids of the infected, and that includes saliva, mucus, etc....If someone coughs on you with ebola, you can get it.... Does it stay airborne? That is the question.... There is currently no evidence that ebola is spread through air and infects by inhalation of air containing live virus, as opposed to inhalation or skin contact of aerosols or droplets containing the virus. By their nature, droplets do not travel very far, and small volumes of water quickly evaporate, thus making them ineffective carriers of infectious virus particles over distances more than a few feet. "Airborne transmission has not been documented during EVD outbreaks. They are, however, infectious as breathable 0.8– to 1.2-μm laboratory-generated droplets." Source: [link to en.wikipedia.org] |
