How atheists handle the fear of death?

if there's no existence afterwards who will there be left to feel sorry or scared?

Why must there be a God to believe in an afterlife?


Death I think it is an organic process that happen naturally to everyone.

No sky fairy handing out justice when you arrive.

No need for a god in this scenario. It just seems that religious people can't grasp this concept and make the condescending assumption they know what atheist believe.

When I became an atheist I immediately lost my fear of death.
I'm not an atheist anymore, by my definition, however I still remember the great relief I felt at that time.

Having known many (and once married to an atheist) at time of death they do not do well.

The difference between believers and and non believers during difficult times and especially failing health, you do not want to care for an atheist. They begin to panic and would rather take others down then face their own death.

My mother-in-law said that it was my fault that she was dying. It was very difficult.

They're generally either consumed by it or far too cynical to care. When I used to be an atheist, I was the former variant.

There was no time in which you didn't exist, since without consciousness there is no time

either you're conscious and extant here and now or your conscious and extant in a different framework of here and now

You don't have any consciousness when you're dead either, or hit by big enough fist.
So death probably feels the same when you're unconscious.

Anyone that says they are not afraid of death is one of three things.

1) in so much pain that death is the only escape.

2) a true believer without any doubt.

Most people dream when they are not conscious

Atheists can be pretty mean sometimes and bitter.

Not waking conscious, but if you don't think you are conscious (just in a less logical and spatial way) while dreaming then we are having different dreams

Why fear the unavoidable? Death is just as much a part of life as eating is. You don't fear eating your lunch, do you?

Besides, I'd rather enjoy the short time I have here without focusing on the inevitable end, whenever that may be.

I don't pretend to know what, if anything, comes after death. Nobody knows. Everybody speculates. It's all speculation. I figure I'll know when I get there. And if there is no "there" to get to, then I won't be around to know I'm dead, so no problem either way. In the meantime, have fun with life and don't take shit too seriously. Just in case it's the only life you do get for real.

Those crusades and the inquisition were run by very warm fuzzy religious people. No mean or bitter people there at all.

Unfortuntely stupidity has that effect on us.

It's not a matter of religion versus atheism, it's a matter of dogmatism versus exploration. That goes both ways.

It almost seems like we use all these words, but really we are just identifying two realities, waking, sleeping. As you noticed, conscious in both of em :D
