EDMONTON - As Alberta Health Services waits on test results for a patient in isolation at an Edmonton hospital with “a potential contagious illness,” spokesman Kerry Williamson said the public is not at risk.

The patient was immediately triaged and placed in isolation and did not spend any time in an emergency department waiting room, Williamson said. He would not say where the patient is being treated.

AHS is waiting for results of various tests and has not yet confirmed the patient’s diagnosis. Williamson has not confirmed whether the person is being evaluated for Ebola infection, or commented on the person’s history or why the isolation protocols were enacted.

“We continue to care for our patient, and provide the necessary treatment,” Williamson said in a brief written statement Sunday. There is “no risk whatsoever” to members of the public and “appropriate steps” are being taken to mitigate risk for staff, he said.
