Any time a group does something like this, even if they do so in good faith it comes back at them because they don't have the "immunity" that a government backed army has. If someone comes up with "proof" they were just at war with Islam, which someone probably will, then they will get persecuted even if what they do helps defeat ISIS.

The Nazis used splinter groups to do things they could blame on Jews, communists and others for propaganda for their cause. This kind of thing is sometimes very useful for politicians, even in the US. Those in power typically like to set these groups up for their own agenda which usually means bad news for the groups used.
