Quoting: Anonymous Coward 3760OK - and just why should we believe YOU? I mean, I'm willing to if you give me a good enough reason. Anonymous Coward User ID: 3760 United States 07/24/2006 01:38 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | The EMP threat was overhyped as a make work project for physicist who were paid good money going through the entire US arsenal testing and analyzing. Fact is, things like cars are not susceptible to EMP because they are so well sheilded. Your car doesn't crap out when lightning hits a mile away. Its the same principle. So scenes like the movie The Day After are pure fantasy. A localized EMP bomb might take out exposed antennas and scramble some computers but the idea that it would shut down everything is a fantasy. High altitude EMP from a nuclear weapon was discovered in the Starfish Prime detonation 500 miles from Hawaii where it set off some burglar alarms and took down some of the power grid. Its the power grid that is most susceptible. So, it there were a nuclear EMP strike - you might see the power go out in certain areas just like when lightning strikes and equipment hooked to the power grid could be damaged in the power surge but your car will work just fine - so will transistor radios and battery operated devices. |

The emp high altitude detonation scanario is way overblown. The only ones that could pull it off are Russia, or the US. Handguns are a skill; shotguns an art; rifles a science. _____________________________________ Democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on whats for dinner. What you can do is fry electronics with a high power microwave beam - I suppose you could implant voices into people's heads as well. You could perhaps heat the ionosphere with normal e-beams. You might even try and cause quakes by causing piezoelectric vibrations in rocksat a critical frequency. But you don't need scalar electromagnutics to change the weather - that happens all by itself according to the Greenland and Antarctic ice cores - and we don't know why. It seems to be connected to the orbital strech cycle - major glaciations. |

The Navy set off three high altitude tests in the fifties with lower yield weapons in the 100kT range in the South Atlantic. The detonations created an aurora and the same longitude and lattitude in the Northern hemisphere as the ionization from the blast was channelled there by the Van Allen belts. The Starfish Prime high altitude detonation over the South Pacific created one hell a light show. It was a one megaton blast and it took out most satellites then in orbit (1964). It was probably being tested as a "pin down" counter where the Soviet missiles would be unable to navigate the intense plasma and ionization. It was NOT during the Cuban missile crisis however. One thing the DoD fears is Al Queda seizing a Pakistani missile and setting it off at high altitide because it would take out most of the low earth orbiting satellites such as spy sats and some comsats. Might even screw up GPS a little. It would be very costly and would leave the US blind for a period util replacements could be orbited. |
