REPUBLICANS GONE CRAZY by A. Alexander
"... The entire GOP has become controlled by a crazy band of ideologically-driven extremist Christians (not to be confused with those who actually practice Christ's teachings) of which Bush, Frist and scores of Republicans including Rick Santorum belong. This small cult within the American experience is the only group today's Republicans seek to satisfy. Whether it is Terry Schiavo, the war in Iraq, school vouchers, flag-burning, gay marriage amendment, the pledge of allegiance, or stem cell research Republicans move from one crazy wedge issue to another. Indeed, they are going from crazy to crazier."

Republicans Gone Crazy

A. Alexander, July 23rd, 2006

It is no secret that the Bush administration and Republicans are completely disconnected from the American people, but what is becoming increasingly obvious is that they've become disconnected from reality. A new Harris Poll shows Bush's rating stuck at a pathetic 34 percent, and the Democrats' lead over Republicans, widening. What is more, 50 percent of ''moderates'' and 32 percent of Conservatives intend to vote Democrat in November. Stunning and shocking numbers to be sure, but there is good reason for this new American political reality and, perhaps, Charles Barkley said it best, ''I was a Republican - until they lost their minds.''

Indeed, Republicans have lost their minds. Indeed, they are going from crazy to crazier.

These wedge issues used to work for Republicans because the majority of the American people weren't familiar with the GOP's true intentions. The people had no idea just how extreme Republican ideology could be and, too, absolutely no clue as to how incompetent ideologically driven political Parties could be. They are today, only too aware.

While the nation and world face serious and grave challenges -- whether it is the economy, Israel's latest fight with Hezbollah, health care, falling wages, rising gas prices, Iraq coming completely undone, or Iran's nuclear weapons -- the Republicans have busied themselves burying their heads in the sand and expending all their energy jumping from one insanity driven wedge issue to another. And it isn't only the issues that are hurting Republicans: Unlike in the past, the American people have a new context in which to see the GOP's wedge issue mania and that context is the craziness driving Republican ideology.

Make no mistake about it, Republicans are truly crazy. Every time they drag out a wedge issue their poll numbers fall. Instead of, as sane people might, recognizing their crazy behavior is doing more harm than good - Republicans seem to think the problem is that the issue wasn't extreme enough, so the next legislative act is even crazier than the last. The problem for Republicans, of course, is that they've become deluded into believing their extremist base is America. Charles Barkley was right, "they lost their minds".

Regardless of the situation or circumstance the Republican response is the same - crazy! As Iraq unravels and a civil war rages, Republicans popup on television to talk about how great things are going and how "we've turned another corner". When the Bush administration predicts a huge deficit and then revises downward their own prediction so the deficit is only less huge, the President claims his economic policies a "success". While gas prices were moving steadily upward, Republicans gave big oil massive tax-cuts. When Terry Schiavo's husband wanted her to die with a little dignity, Republicans literally tried to rip her from her bed. As more than 1,000 Americans perished in New Orleans, Bush was telling "Brownie" he was doing "a heckuva job". And now, in what can only be considered the craziest of the crazy, Republicans like Newt Gingrich and the usual propaganda suspects such as Hannity and Limbaugh, undoubtedly on Rove's orders, are trying to convince the American people that they are in the midst of World War Three.

Not only are Republicans trying to convince the American people that they are living in the midst of World War Three, but Newt Gingrich thinks Bush should make congress convene sometime in September and actually declare World War Three.

That is truly crazy! Yet, Republicans cannot see reality through their extremist ideology goggles. Here is a little reality tester for Republicans: If you have to tell people they are in the midst of World War Three because you, as a Republican, don't think they can figure it out for themselves...it is probably because it isn't World War Three. If and when World War Three does happen, it isn't too likely people will need politicians to point it out. It'll be pretty damned obvious.

The reason Bush's ratings are stuck in the 30's and Republicans keep falling farther behind Democrats in the polls is simple, Republicans have become disconnected from reality. As Charles Barkley said, ''I was a Republican - until they lost their minds.''

_____________

The only difference between the Republican and Democratic parties is the velocities with which their knees hit the floor when corporations knock on their door. That's the only difference.

I believe I can see the future, 'cause I repeat the same routine. I think I used to have a purpose, but then again, it might have been a dream

Unfortunately, very little nowadays, Heidi.

I posted the article because I think Alexander raises some good specifics about the current controlling party, however, I'm not too optimistic about the current Dems either.

Nevertheless, I don't think Democrats, nor coventional conservatives, would lead us as rapidly into the disaster we're heading towards now with the Bush gang at the helm.

We really need to reevaluate our entire, so-called, 'two party system', but at this juncture, time is of the essence.

I, for one, am not hopeful.

flag waver
The problem with Amerika politicaly today is the fact that the radical factions of either the democrats or republicans have been controlling the outcome of the country. When do the real people, the majority of the people that have views that are much more moderate, start to rear their heads and take over the operation of this fine nation. It is about time to eject the radical right and left wingers for some common sense. Put the radicals in their place, and let them be cannon fodder for the mideast wars.

There is the prophecy about 'he' would make war while speaking of bringing peace, and that 'he' would be the cause of WWlll.

That the Republicans, particularly the administration, would attempt to manipulate opinion and view of reality via the media is nothing new.

Re: REPUBLICANS GONE CRAZY by A. Alexander
Regarding the comments about the Democrats - since congress has been controlled by republicans since 1994, how do we know the democrats are as bad as the republicans? The democrats are locked out of sub-committee meetings, locked out of k-street project.

Only a few of the same democrats that were there in the 1980s are there today.

I feel that the 'democrats are the same as the republicans' spill is another karl rove propaganda piece. If they are the same, you might as well vote republican...

Though, yes, we all need to get off of our collective asses and bring in a 3rd party.

Re: REPUBLICANS GONE CRAZY by A. Alexander
The reason why there's so little to choose from between Democrats and Republicans comes down to one factor: the restricted range of people who are prepared (or rich enough) to go through the whole rigmarole of politics and electioneering.

When all's said and done, most politicians come from a legal or executive background and share the same contacts, outlook and aspirations as their fellow politicians. In other words, politicians are most similar to other politicians, and not their constituents!

Of course they make a good job of pretending to be what the folks back home want them to be (e.g. Bush's fake Texan act). But away from the tub-thumping and grandstanding, they're cutting deals with the groups that matter most: the lobbyists.

So naturally, if a rich and influential group like the Evangelical Right offers to vote for them consistently, and support them lavishly, in exchange for a few morsels of moralistic claptrap, then politicians will turn handsprings for their new-found friends.

For the same reason, why did certain US Senators and Congressmen turn out for the "coronation" of the ridiculous Rev. Moon a few years ago? Because the cunning sect leader also happens to own an influential paper and have a large personal fortune to support the politicos he chooses. Same for Rupert Murdoch on a much bigger scale. Before Blair became British PM, he had to go to Murdoch and impress him so that the Murdoch press would back his election.

The weird thing is that most of these rich and influential groups/figures are anything but rational. In fact they seem to get their money from promoting crazy ideas (like Scientology) and raking it in from gullible punters. The politicians, whose goal is to stay in office and reap the rewards, don't care how crazy their backers are so long as they get their backhanders...

At some point this system will reach a point of no return, question is when the tipping point comes and it gets too crazy to see reality. I think that time is almost upon us, which is why the more rational conservatives are getting very worried about the Republican situation.
