Contrast what Shepard Smith, a television reporter says about Ebola to what Dr. Michael Osterholm, Director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy says about Ebola:

The following are Dr. Osterholm's qualifications:

"The author of more than 315 papers and abstracts, including 21 book chapters, Dr. Osterholm is a frequently invited guest lecturer on the topic of epidemiology of infectious diseases. He serves on the editorial boards of nine journals, including Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology and Microbial Drug Resistance: Mechanisms, Epidemiology and Disease, and he is a reviewer for 24 additional journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine, the Journal of the AmericanMedical Association, and Science. He is past president of the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE) and has served on the CDC's National Center for Infectious Diseases Board of Scientific Counselors from 1992 to 1997. Dr. Osterholm served on the IOM Forum on Microbial Threats from 1994 through 2011. He has served on the IOM Committee on Emerging Microbial Threats to Health in the 21st Century and the IOM Committee on Food Safety, Production to Consumption, and he was a reviewer for the IOM Report on Chemical and Biological Terrorism. As a member of the American Society for Microbiology (ASM), Dr. Osterholm has served on the Committee on Biomedical Research of the Public and Scientific Affairs Board, the Task Force on Biological Weapons, and the Task Force on Antibiotic Resistance. He is a frequent consultant to the World Health Organization (WHO), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Department of Defense, and the CDC. He is a fellow of the American College of Epidemiology and the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA)."

What are Shepard Smith's qualifications?

Dr. Osterholm sounds far less certain about what we know about Ebola than Shepard Smith does, yet Shepard Smith has far less experience dealing with infectious diseases and public health issues.

Dr Osterholm starts by saying that he knows less about Ebola than he did 6 months ago. He goes on to say, "For a successful public health response, reality must take precedence over public relations for nature cannot be fooled."

I posted this on another thread but it probably really belongs here.

Watched the Osterholm video and was amazed. I have several family members who have now watched it (all prominent in various medical fields) who feel it's the most honest and accurate info they've heard so far. One even has even heard this guy speak and has the utmost respect and trust in him as a medical professional.

And he is correct. There have been three fucking cases of Ebola in the U.S.

That is essentially meaningless and trivial.

The reason it is hyped up on the media and GLP is because it generates revenue.

Plain and simple, in case you forgot, the news is entertainment now, not journalism,

It's you long term numbers and traffic.

Re: Fox's Shepard Smith Blasts Media For "Hysterical," "Irresponsible" Ebola Coverage
To me, the scariest thing he says in this whole video (besides his confidence in vaccines), is at about 20:17 where he is talking about a number of Ebola virologists who are very concerned about airborne transmission and he says the following:

Today (10-14-14)I have been given permission…something that I have known about for a few weeks…when I wrote the piece, I knew about this and it has concerned me greatly…Gary Kobinger and colleagues at Winnipeg, the Canadian National Lab, actually took one of the strains from Guinea and put it into macaques a little over a month and a half ago.
What they saw was remarkable.

It was unlike any of the Ebola viruses they've seen in monkeys. It was much, much, more severe, the pathology in the lungs was remarkable, and as Gary said (who is one of the most prominent Ebola virologists in the world) said, “It is very worrisome to me, about what I saw there.”

 Quoting: emerald eye

Ebola 2014 is Mutating as Fast as Seasonal Flu

The current Ebola 2014 virus is mutating at a similar rate to seasonal flu (Influenza A). This means the current Ebola outbreak has a very high intrinsic rate of viral mutation. The bottom line is that the Ebola virus is changing rapidly, and in the intermediate to long term (3 months to 24 months), Ebola has the potential to evolve.

We cannot predict exactly what the Ebola virus will look like in 24 months. There is an inherent stochastic randomness to viral evolution which makes predictions on future viral strains difficult, if not impossible. One basic tenet we can rely on is this: Viruses tend to maximize their infectivity (basic reproduction number) within their biological constraints (Nowak, 2006).

These evolutionary constraints can be extremely complex, and can include trade-offs between virulence and infectivity, conditions of superinfection, host population dynamics, and even outbreak control measures.

One of the few statements we can make with confidence that the Ebola genome is changing at a specific rate, which is explained below.

Ebola Mutation Rate:

Analysis of the available research suggests that the Ebola 2014 virus is currently mutating at a rate 200% to 300% higher than historically observed (Gire, 2014).

If the virus is mutating this fast, a vaccine will have a difficult time catching up, especially if there are increased numbers of humans infected, cycling into increased human mutations. I have personally never been a big fan of vaccines or vaccine science, although I do respect Dr Osterholm tremendously and I am trying to keep an open mind. Nothing is worse right now than a closed mind, which is one of the reasons that I so respect Dr. Osterholm and people like him and even though he does not have all the answers, at least he is asking the questions. I too am a person who asks lot questions; sometimes it has served me well, sometimes not.
Here is a very old thread of mine (2011), concerning mercury in vaccinations:

Thread: Reversing Alzheimer's disease, mercury toxicity, and mercury containing vaccination.

One of the concerns that I have with a “Ebola vaccine, is that many egg based vaccines are often contaminated with mycoplasma, especially those that are being rapidly produced particularly in response to pandemics, when production is rushed and testing possibly more lax.

[link to www.fda.gov]

Here is a video that explains the mycoplasma problem pretty well (the short version, easy to understand):

[link to www.youtube.com (secure)]

Weaponized mycoplasma:
[link to www.youtube.com (secure)]

One of my concerns about a rapidly produced Ebola vaccine is that it may be likely to be contaminated by mycoplasma given the rushed circumstances, although proper testing and treatment may decrease the threat.
[link to www.bioind.com]

The concern that I have about that is alluded to in this paper on Ebola Reston transmission in pigs (one of the papers that Dr. Osterholm refers to in his video). The concern is that coexistent mycoplasma infection in the pigs was theorized to assist the Ebola (Reston)replication process and support higher levels of virus in the lungs.

Mycoplasma may predispose animals to enhanced REBOV replication as increased populations of alveolar macrophages may support higher levels of virus replication, Unfortunately, lack of capability for identification of nonviral pathogens at BSL4 currently precludes detailed examination of such interactions.”

PS. Those of you in health-care or with health care members in your family should read the following CIDRAP article published in September of this year:

[link to www.cidrap.umn.edu]

Good luck to all of us; we must keep asking questions and not be bullied into silence by talking heads on a TV screen or anyone else. Worse yet, we must not be lured into a false sense of security. I believe that a false sense so security is how the health care workers in Dallas were infected, they were too trusting. Maybe I had better shut up, don’t want a knock on my door. hiding2
