Why do you assume that the aliens are peaceful? There are many ways for a civilization to have advanced space flight. It's actually ridiculously easy to do, doesn't require that much tech. Not that you're supposed to know, but it's possible to create an interstaller vehicle using a few resources easily obtained in the here and now. It's just something that is hard to see unless you're looking for and am more "aware" than what science currently exposes. Anyways, these aliens are evil because they've been built up and bread to hate anything and everything else. It's a little hard to explain, like why serial killers act like the do - they're often quiet brilliant, but lack any empathy for others.

Eventually, one race encounters another vying for the same local resources. The more powerful and brutal race always prevails. The conquered are then properly utilized as a slave class. Eventually, as other races are conquered, they become a soldier class, until becoming full citizens. This only works because new, lower classes are constantly being added to the empire.
