Anonymous Coward User ID: 58136669 United States 10/25/2014 02:36 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Finland is what is referred to as a "Major Non-NATO Ally." Quoting: Anonymous Coward Despite the liberal whining, the simple fact remains that there is a tight military alliance between Finland and the U.S.. Lot of inter-service exchanges, lots of shared resources. The Fins realize they need U.S. might to deter Russia. The U.S. needs access to the bases, particularly for aircraft, surveillance assets, etc.. In the event of war, both Finland, the U.S. and the whole of NATO will benefit significantly from these types of relationships. While the Finnish sheeple will likely always vote down NATO membership, there are few aspects of such a relationship that do not already exist. Sure, there are no conditions for permanent basing of troops and such but big whoop. They can be flown there pretty quickly from other parts of the world. True- Finnish forces will likely resort to fighting withdrawal to the western border to wait for NATO reinforcements. There are already plans to relocate the airforce to Sweden and fly missions from there, and to provide the stronger Swedish Navy a way to operate in the Finnish coastal waters. |

Quoting: whats next The Corps has stashed weapons and equipment in the Norwegian countryside since the 1980s. With this setup, Marines can fly in and be ready for a fight in no time. In addition, the Pentagon saves money by not having to keep a large force in Norway year-round. Washington already spends billions each year running huge bases across Europe. But in the past, Marines rushing toward the sound of gunfire might have lacked firepower. Five years ago, Humvees with machine guns and missiles were the only combat vehicles in Norwegian storage, according to tables in an official Marine Corps handbook. In August, the military added M-1A1 Abrams tanks and a number of Assault Breacher Vehicles to the bunkers. The latter are heavily armored tracks designed to blow up minefields and push through other obstacles. The Pentagon also added M-88 tank retrievers, amphibious assault vehicles, up-armored Humvees, and various upgraded trucks to the cache. The Corps was expected to finish moving the new materiel under the mountains by the end of the month. [link to theweek.com] |

The Finnish terrain is full of natural choke points (lakes and rivers) and full of dense forest and hills. That means that Russian armor and armored infantry would be struggling. However, the Finns don't have an airforce that could seriously take on the Russians (unless the Norwegians and Swedes, in particular, get involved). Only a few aging F-18s. Air-supremacy counts for a lot in modern warfare. |
