Re: URGENT oct29-Dog people! Ive got a question.
I noticed my dog constantly licking at his leg today, just above his carpal pad.
His leg looks a bit red and then theres just one tiny black spot that I think it whats bugging him.
A quick google search brought up allergies and bacterial infections, hes gonna go to the vet as soon as my cheque hits the mailbox, but anyone have any ideas?

Im hesitant to think its allergies because its just that one spot.
Im worried that a burr or something got caught in there and maybe its infected?

Anything is appreciated.

Yeah, I agree with other posters. Could be an allergic reaction... Bee sting maybe? When a dog is compulsively licking, in one spot, it is usually pain or discomfort. Can't tell you what to do, but Benadryl works awesome if you think it is an allergic reaction... One 25mg tablet is generally safe over 60lbs....good luck!

My dog has bouts with allergies, and after licking, some skin areas are blackened. No idea if the licking actually caused it though.
Do you have any Benadryl you can give him to cut down the itching?

If you can get him to leave the spot alone for a day or two, you'll know whether to take him to the vet.

Looks to me like an allergy, flea or atopic. If you can take him to the vet they can get a skin scraping if necessary to pin it down, but he probably just needs a few medicated baths.

I know the pics are crap Im gonna shave it more and get a better look at it in a bit.
Its not a hot spot.
I was wondering cyst but the whole leg was a bit red as well.
it doesnt really look raised but I havent gotten a good look at it yet either.
Its not just his skin, his whole body is very pale almost translucent, I would have noticed any thing like this before.

He hasnt licked at it since I bathed it but I am cooking now so hes distracted.

Ps we live in an apartment anytime hes outside he is always on a leash and in my sight, so I dont think its a sting and if anything did actually cut him or anything I would know because he is a HUGE HUGE baby.

Hi dayzd: I was worried about my dog and he went from bad to worse. I finally went to see a 'specialist' dermatologist vet in a bigger city because my beautiful dog was miserable and losing his energy - licking constantly at night - the sores on his feet were making it hard to walk - all four pads at a time - and my vet didn't know what to do.

So if it spreads you know it's not a burr or something like that.

Well I switched his food to just a three ingredient dogfood, he was given meds to cover all possibilities, including parasites that you cannot see even under a microscope, and it all went away. But it took months to clear up. And I'm not sure what it was, but he's good now. It's so hard to diagnose a dog because they can't tell you what's wrong. But I don't think it was allergy related - more like parasites - that can be picked up in any dogpark or kennel.

But your dog just has the one spot and that would be great if it's just some thorn or something - simple. But try to take him to a vet and have it checked out.

I hope he's better soon!

Dogs are pretty tough, but they can hurt too, be it a sprain or cracked bone, you would know it if it was either one of those.

Too many baths can dry up the oils on their skin, causing itching.

Like I said, if he's not holding his leg up/limping, it's probably nothing serious.

OP, I realize you said the pics were not great. It does not look red, etc.. So, until you can get to a vet, if your dog is not exhibiting anything else beside licking, just do warm compresses followed by cold. My dogs body breaks out in hives with a bite, including swelling of the face. I know not all situations are the same, but if your dog is not in distress, minimal is better!!

It was red and warm but I soaked him in med shampoo and that made a difference. You wouldnt be able to see the redness with my smartphone camera anyways, unless I shave him bald which I kinda dont want to do

Wow. I appreciate that so much.
But I do not have a pay-pal account and Im really hesitant about accepting money from strangers. It just makes me feel kinda weird, but if it heaven forbid turns into something serious I can set something up to accept donations.

I think Im going to get a cone for him because he is back to constantly licking it. Hes weird and if something did poke him a week ago and hes been chewing at it all this time that may have caused bruising under the skin like someone mentioned. Theres just one little area thats black and its only his leg so as long as its isolated Im not gonna panic.

Sure somebody's already said this but could be a tick. G to the vet. If so, potential Lyme disease.

Hope he's OK!

have you tried putting some antibiotic ointment on it, or perhaps some Benadryl cream. And OP I will check back on this thread, and if you need help, like I say I will send you some money. No thanks needed, no strings attached. I just love dogs and I don't want your dog to be in discomfort.

Re: URGENT oct29-Dog people! Ive got a question.
So today his leg looks fine. the black spots still there.

We've got bigger problems though. I noticed that his prepuce was kinda irritated looking with a scab.
AND THEN.
He pooped in the house twice overnight.

See a couple days ago I fed my other dog this canned food that hes been on for months, but that day he had a crazy bout of diarrhoea after, I figured it was the gelatineishy crap in there so we fed the rest of the can to this dog,
And he had the poops the next day but not as bad and like a little at first. and then normal poops, and then last night theyre soft.

Its possible that that can was tainted and its just taking him longer to get it out of his system, but the only time he ever pooped in the house was when we had that ice storm last winter. So hes going to the vet in a few hours.

thoughts & prayers its something simple

Update:
Hes fine, its probably a hormonal issue but he has some cream for his irritated spots and some antibiotics for his tummy.

He went to pet store for some new shampoo and toys.
He hates me because I had to put a cone on his head. Theres a towel in the cone under his chin because thats the only way he will lay down.
