Reinstalling Windows 8 Question
How long is it suppose to take?

I started the process over half an hour ago and it still says 'preparing'

is it stuck or is it suppose to take this long?

(no laughing - I'm not a techie)

Re: Reinstalling Windows 8 Question
The DVD might be unreadable you could hit the open tray button and close it back and see if the progress starts moving.
Or you could use the Microsoft windows 8 to usb tool and install it from a USB stick instead.

no DVD - just using the recovery option that is part of Windows 8

On a newer PC (dual core or above), it should not take that long. Older pc's may not even install or will hang when trying.

OK - just thought it might be stuck or something

it's a friend's 'puter - got a virus that I finally got off but it messed some things up in the process. Since he really didn't have much on the computer other than some downloaded movies, we figured that wiping and starting fresh would be the best option.

sounds as though the recovery partition might be corrupt from the virus..give it another hour and if it doesnt reboot you might have to find a windows 8 dvd...

Upgrading on older is impossible if the bios doesn't have a certain verification feature, Win7 is as high as that system cam go. I lost a few older Win7 systems as they were OEM numbers and it only is good for the original board/HD rather than the frame which can be hardware upgraded forever. Those systems are either trash or linux bound as I doubt Dell will be sending me a new Win7 number.

LOL! I went straight from XP to 8 earlier this year. Spent the first couple of months bitching and swearing but now that I've got the hang of it, I'm used to it.

I detest Windows 8. I also have a computer with 7 but like to use the 8 once in a while.

You know how most computers "ask" you if they can install updates? Well 8 does not ask, but merrily goes ahead and screws up everything you are doing.

Next time I get a chance, I'm installing 7.

Yeah, the constant updates are a bitch. Fortunately, I only use my computer for entertainment and not work.
