Tooting your own horn - do you do it?
I don't get people who don't do it. They seem to think that as long as they do their job well, they'll get noticed. It doesn't work like that and then they're stuck for 20 years in the same job and position.

If you do something well, you should keep shouting about it. Otherwise, nobody will pay attention. Not a single successful person has ever been shy about his accomplishments. That's why they are seen as successful. Tell people about your success, show it, even embellish it.

Modesty makes me sick.

i agree.
for me, its not about bragging or im better than anyone else.

its about expressing the value you bring to the relationship and ensuring that others recognize that value in real terms.

No, I used to, and can still glorify myself a bit when I am upset or in a bad mood. I have apparently pretty much claimed to be God incarnate if my feathers have really been ruffled. I usually regret what I have said afterwards, even though I rarely remember completely what I have said. It's like someone takes over.

Otherwise, normally, I do not toot my horn. Actually quite the opposite.

I suppose with certain elements about myself I do it but the things that I do it about are not very easily recognible to other people, if at all.

Re: Tooting your own horn - do you do it?
Sometimes you have to do it otherwise there are too many people that will take credit for things you are doing.

I worked in the corporate environment for a long time. When they find people like me that can do the job very well then that person is stuck because of the value of the work. Those who toot their own horn frequently aren't that valuable as at some point they get into things way over their heads. Of course when you reach a certain level of management you can be a complete boob and be successful because of the staff you employ.

Life isn't fair.

A local very conservative bank almost failed and was taken over by another bank. The management team got into the mortgage madness before the real estate market went bust and that brought down the bank. Nothing happened to the corporate board. They got to take over another bank because they knew what they were doing. These guys tooted their own horn (lied) about their abilities to run a bank. Several people got into legal trouble but of course the bank's board wasn't aware of what those managers were doing.

There are lots of executives that know they can get away with just about anything. A lot of people get trapped in a sea of debt and can't go shopping for a better job. If you are a good employee you may not get noticed unless you do some tooting. Make too much noise though and you might get the axe. Tooting your own horn sometimes works good as long as you don't point your finger at others.

I say if you are lucky enough to have a horn, you better toot it, because you can bet that someone else will tooting theirs!
