More than 80% lived in poverty in the early 19th century. For the last decades we have estimates of the share of the world population living with less than 1.25$ per day (the international poverty line used by the World Bank). From the chart we see that according to this measure about half the world population was still living in poverty in 1981. Since then poverty has been declining more rapidly and the share of the world population living in absolute poverty was down to 21% in 2010. This is no reason for complacency but it is clear that the trajectory of change is pointing in the right direction and that the world is changing very fast right now. So some people have more money, less people are dying in wars, and some people are living longer. That does not mean that the world is a better place. WWIII is all that it takes to change those statistics. At this rate, WWIII will be us vs nature. |

This is shown in the graphs in this entry. # The Success of Vaccinations The rotavirus is the most common cause of diarrhoea and causes 527,000 childhood deaths annually (2011) and many more are falling sick and are hospitalized.1 Mexico introduced the rotavirus vaccination between 2006 and 2007 and the following graph shows how successful the countrywide vaccination was – according to the study diarrhea mortality for children under the age of 5 fell by 56% over three years! The graph shows the seasonal pattern of the disease and how the lifesaving effect of the vaccine affected different age groups. [link to www.ourworldindata.org] Handle |

It was much better to live on this planet 150 years ago. Maybe we must go through hell to reach heaven though, from that point of view you would be right if you already know the future. |

I have illustrated it with two superb charts from ourworldindata.org, a website being developed by the talented Max Roser. [link to www.rationaloptimist.com] Handle |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 23764026 United States 10/31/2014 09:17 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I think this is a good post. Many Americans don't understand how good they have it, and our history has been glossed over in school so many have no concept of how difficult life can really be. I'm not starving. I don't have to kill anyone, or worry about being killed as apart of my daily routine. Life is good. Sure, there's a lot of bad things going on, and our great empire is on the verge of collapse, and bad sh*t is going down, but bad sh*t has always been going down. Throughout history I think every generation believes the challenges it faces are greater and insurmountable compared to the priors. Mainly because of the fear of not knowing how they'll turn out. Cheers. I hope your world continues to become a better place! |
