Best movie you've never heard of...

Nothing? I'd post a trailer, but it doesn't do it justice. Suffice to say it's a cross between Coen brothers and Tarantino, but better because it has unknown, really really good actors and feels very real. It's on Netflix - I watched it last night and was riveted throughout. See it, if you don't like it, come back and we can argue :)

"Face of Fire" with James Whitmore.

This is about a handyman who is beloved by all until he is severely disfigured rescuing a child, after which the townspoeple turn upon him to the point that they are ready for violence.

Very sad and heartrending movie. Received mostly GREAT reviews, but cannot even find it now on DVD.

Agreed on this one - definitely a sleeper as I had never heard of it when I watched it eons ago, let alone knew is was a Scorsese! Great movie.

A man from earth

No special effects, no fade backs, simple story in a cabin where one man talks to his friends who are professors, he in a nutshell tells them he has been alive since the Neanderthals, that he never ages and he can only stay in one place for about ten years befor he moves because people notice.

They all have an intelligent conversation and ask him lots of questions.
A very good movie.

+1 on Donnie Darko (although I think at this point that's mega cult status) and Shadow of the Vampire (the original Nosferatu is very good too!). And I'll throw another in the mix - The Proposition. If you like McCarthy's book Blood Meridian, you'd like that.

Its pretty harsh and in your face. but its actually really deep. and the director obviously knew that and showed it to us in the the last shots of the movie. when everything comes to the same end.
