I think I know why food prices have gone up so much lately. At least this is part of the reason.

this is a great thread and everyone seems to have very valid points.

As a housewife, here are the prices for food in SW Colorado:

Walmart brand Butter $4.25/lb
Albertsons & Kroger about $5.25-$5.50/lb. Famous brand names.

Milk - $3.89/gallon at all stores plus or minus $.05.

Walmart 85% ground round about $4.50/lb
Albertson's and Kroger over $5.50/lb

As far as bread, milk, or meat, for famous brand names, Walmart is usually cheaper by at least $1.00-$2.00 range.

Cleaning supplies for brand names much cheaper usually at Walmart. Although I usually look at the weekly grocery ads in the mail, and if I find loss-leaders (like $12.00 detergent for $6.99), I will shift stores and load up a bit.

I think it all depends where you live.

We are paying about $.60-.75/gallon over the national average just for gasoline here.

Our local warmart had signs up for a very brief time last summer that they were now accepting competitor coupons and even honoring BOGOs from competitor weekly ads. They didn't keep the signs up long.

Don't know if they are still doing it or not, as I rarely shop there.

you folks shop all wrong. You are suppose to buy only what is on sale, when it is on sale. That is how I shop now, and I save thousands a year doing that. If it isn't on sale I don't buy it that simple.

Pork and chicken are relatively cheap in comparison....dunno where you are shopping.

Hopefully if it is that tight of a budget you are buying whole chickens, pork loins, shoulders ..... etc. ....large cuts.

what is happening is our government is giving out a certain amount of food stamps to the general population based on profits for big corporate food chains and food manufacturers

food stamps means big corporate profits

but, what it means for the rest of us is major struggle to feed our family

Grocery stores in challenged neighborhoods always charge more. Some of them raise prices at the beginning of the month when the new food stamps are distributed. They are off setting the higher amount of loss through theft and the need for security because of higher crime. Also, there is much less competition in challenged neighborhoods because less people are willing to do business there. Towards the end of the month, when many have run out of food stamps, prices go much lower. Stores like Aldis are the exception, the cost for staples like butter and milk stay low all month.

Well I hope you aren't voting today because all that democracy ends up doing is making the lower class bigger and bigger.

People are moving here from other territories and countries to get welfare. 20% of US households on food stamps in 2013. In my city many more poor people, single mothers, jobless young people now eating at shelters for lunch and dinner.

The individual stores, not the govt, set the prices, so if anyone is price gouging, it's them.

Poor people usually buy processed foods, it's cheaper (in general, not just at that store) and faster to prepare.

In my household we eat homecooked organic meal and never buy processed food. This is goof for health so I like to promote it as a good lifestyle for others, but on the other hand I'm aware that I'm also bragging that we have the money and time to make this happen. I know if I were mking minimum wage, things would be different.

All of the people that I know that have immigrated into the USA in the past 40 years are all successful entrepreneurs that never relied on government hand outs.

I believe this is the same scenario why College tuition has gone up exponentially. They love the gov student loans and they know the gov will keep paying them no matter what cost.... Greedy fuckers.

what i'm saying is that the government is working hand in hand with big corporations and that is what decides how much food stamps they put into the population

i think the food stamp SNAP program is a veiled government bail out to big food corporations

I had this thought the other day when I noticed all WIC approved items were priced so high. Stores making loot knowing they will get paid by the gvt.

Welfare probably pays more than minimum wage when travel and even childcare is factored in. Not to mention the taxes taken out.

increase in single mothers? bc state pays for the maternity doctor and the hospital bill to have the baby. then feds feed them.

but the thing that i am trying to convey in this thread is that the freebies are providing profits NOT deficits. however, its wrecking everything so terribly that we will probably not ever be able to recover. not to mention that the typical american citizen/family is not able to sustain themselves in the current environment, let alone any future one.

money really is the root of all evil
