The Bullet That Could Make 3-D Printed Guns Practical Deadly Weapons
As 3-D printed guns have evolved over the past 18 months from a science-fictional experiment into a subculture, they’ve faced a fundamental limitation: Cheap plastic isn’t the best material to contain an explosive blast. Now an amateur gunsmith has instead found a way to transfer that stress to a component that’s actually made of metal—the ammunition.

Michael Crumling, a 25-year-old machinist from York, Pennsylvania, has developed a round designed specifically to be fired from 3-D printed guns. His ammunition uses a thicker steel shell with a lead bullet inserted an inch inside, deep enough that the shell can contain the explosion of the round’s gunpowder instead of transferring that force to the plastic body or barrel of the gun. Crumling says that allows a home-printed firearm made from even the cheapest materials to be fired again and again without cracking or deformation. And while his design isn’t easily replicated because the rounds must be individually machined for now, it may represent another step towards durable, practical, printed guns—even semi-automatic ones.

“It’s a really simple concept: It’s kind of a barrel integrated into the shell, so to speak,” says Crumling. “Basically it removes all the stresses and pressures from the 3-D printed parts. You should be able to fire an unlimited number of shots through the gun without replacing any parts other than the shell.”

Or you add a steel insert into the 3D printed gun into which the round is loaded.
The insert reinforces the plastic locally, does the same thing.

yep

plus there are many resins, liquid metal, etc that will be used to toughen the stressed area.

Offer still stands.

Used to work for the company that printed the world's first 3rd printed metal gun. If someone wants to get serious about buying one of the machines required to print these, I'm willing to help them get their machine and prints up and running.

I'm in Austin.

Why not develop a bullet with a built in high air pressure charge? Simply pierce the cartridge to release the high pressure air to propel the bullet, just like the earliest hunting air rifles used by the earliest American explorers. Sorry, forgot the name of that rifle - it was on Discovery channel just a while ago.

Doesn't matter too much for a while. Gun control is a dead ass donkey for a while. The demtards whipped up a fury of gun control shit after the school shootings last year and they didn't get what they wanted. now they've shot their wad.

And even better now they've lost control of congress.

Except in a few heavily demtard localities gun control is DOA for at least the next 2 years and by then these printed guns will be a matured technology.

Heck no. They got bought by an even bigger company and even added a new machine for metals, but why would the Feds confiscate their equipment when so many of their orders come from defense companies and gov agencies. That's one of the main reasons I left.

Despite what I could have earned there, it wasn't worth losing my soul over. Being a big fan of this website and reading it daily really opened my eyes as to what some of the purpose of our largest orders were for. I started to put two and two together.

Loved the technology however. It's quite facinating and has a lot of room for improvement, however if put into to right hands, some great things could be accomplished and created.

Have to admit, the "reason" printed by solid concepts is a pretty fucking nice gun considering it popped out of a machine. Supposedly there was no after printing clean up required either.

If we the people can have the tech to print things like this today, just imagine the kind of shit .gov is busy printing in the vacuum above.

There was a little bit of Machine finishing but nothing critical of course you need some post-op work too however. It was amazing to see the barrel printed with the groves in place for bullet spin. Only two components of the 1911 weren't printed. Last time I talked to the guys they had said the original print had fired over 7000 rounds without fail!
The original is going to the Smithsonian.

You of course would need to know how all the components were placed before printing and how to build the support structures to accomplish the ideal geometries without deformation.

Like I said, would be happy to help if someone had the funds.

So a steel metal jacket...just like a Geneva round(think that's what it was) designed to penetrate a victim with minimum damage so a soldier would take a hit that would pass clean without maiming so they could possibly heal quickly n return to the battlefeild. Fuck that.. design a 3d printe that incorporates a metal alloy sleeve inside the barrel that allows you to fire a lead hollow point or wad cutter to inflict maximum damage per round. What's the sense of a 3d clean exit gun that could allow someone to take a hit n keep fighting???
