Freezer defrosted with meat in it. How to clean?

Check the drain pipe is free of any crap. If not use a coat hanger/wire and hose/pressure hose to clean it out.

Put some neat bleach on a cloth and wipe all the sides - use rubber gloves. Close the lid for 2 hours. This keeps all the fumes within the freezer and keeps the bleach active. 2 hours later open freezer in WELL VENTILATED area. 1 hour later wipe sides with cloth soaked in fresh water. Dry sides with clean cloth. Turn freezer back on.

Another old, but exceptionally good remedy is a few drops of vanilla essence in a small bowl of water.
Wipe the entire interior surface with this solution and you should get a sweet smelling freezer.
Great when cleaning the fridge, too.

Junk the feezer, it will always be a health risk.

For minor stains and general freshness you can use bicarbonate of soda to clean but a seriously contaminated unit is a liability.

Thank you all very much for suggestions. I cleaned heavily with bleach, closed and "cooked" for a three hours, vented, wiped up with fresh water and vinigar, and it did the job.

I did the same thing except mine was for about a month after a power outage tripped a GFCI outlet.....

Horrid Smell.


What worked for us was to put charcoal (old fashioned kind, no lighter fluid) and let it sit as well as one of those odor absorbing gels. I used that for about a month and then washed with bleach water. It is fine now.

After leaving a pound of meat in an rv freezer for 2weeks it turned green. After opening all the windows I used a shovel to scoop it up real quick and put it in the neighbors trash. The smell just wont go away even with a box of baking soda in there. I tried everything. Bleach\windex\scrubbing bubbles\liquid chlorine\whatever I could find. Even tried leaving it open for weeks after cleaning it multiple times in a row. The smell just wont go away.

then set it out in the sun, leave it oepn and nature will take care of it

That is what I use too.
