Like everyone else, you complain of being tired, exhausted. And yet, do you really know what tiredness is?

Like everyone else, you complain of being tired, exhausted. And yet, do you really know what tiredness is? Tiredness is something that attaches itself to you like clingy people who will not leave you alone and are always demanding that you love them and be with them. That’s right; because you accept tiredness and pay attention to it you reinforce it, and it keeps coming back. So, now, it is time to have a different attitude, and see what happens. During spring and summer, it is good for you to be present at the sunrise. Often you think, ‘My God, it’s so difficult to get out of bed so early; I’m so tired!’ Well, you will always be tired. But tell yourself, ‘It’s true; I don’t want to get up, but I want that to change. I’ll get up all the same.’ Then you get up, you rinse your face, you go out into the fresh air, and suddenly you feel your tiredness has disappeared. Contrary to what people imagine, to get rid of tiredness you should not remain inactive; you should move, do something. If you do not fight your tiredness, it will never leave you.

But this is not spring nor summer.
This is fall, winter, the dark days....my daylight hours are spent confined in an office.

Do you have any fancy words for one in despair?

The slightest thing that happens to us in our life is recorded within us: encounters, experiences, everything is kept on record, providing us with extraordinary possibilities, for then all we have to do is relive them as often as we wish. Even the most destitute creature has had a few moments of joy in their life, and they can recall them to counteract the thoughts and feelings that overwhelm them. Why should they just keep brooding on their disappointments and sorrows? You must have experienced those wonderful states of consciousness where, at least for a few seconds, you understood that life can be light, peace, beauty, love, fulfilment… Even if at present you are lost in despair, those moments are not erased; you can recall them and feel the benefit of their vibrations coursing through you. Go back to them often… remember the place, the circumstances, and try to retrieve the same thoughts, the same feelings, the same sensations. Gradually you will have the impression you are living these states once more, with the same intensity as if you were experiencing them here and now. Objective reality is not what is most important: what is important is what you manage to create within yourself.

Place the word ‘harmony’ at the very centre of your life; keep it within you as a kind of tuning-fork, and as soon as you feel a bit worried or upset, take this tuning-fork and listen to it, to bring your whole being into harmony with boundless, cosmic life. Let the notion of harmony gradually infuse all your cells! Through harmony we attract the spirits of light to us from the invisible world, and they become our friends and never leave us again. It is often hard to free ourselves from dark spirits, but the spirits of light are every bit as tenacious. Why would friends not be as tenacious and obstinate as enemies? They come to support us, to enlighten us, to advise us, and if we follow their advice we are always truly inspired. This is why even in the worst of situations we should not despair: one day, things will turn to our advantage, because we have been truly inspired. So there is nothing more important than cultivating this state of harmony to attract our friends from the invisible world.

Speaking is not merely uttering sounds. Each word spoken possesses vibrations, which means it is possible for it to act as either a constructive or destructive force. Most people are not aware of this, which is why we see so much damage and ruination caused solely by words. Every word spoken automatically gives rise to particular feelings, so that if you say constructive, life-enhancing words, very soon the corresponding feelings are aroused. When an actor first comes on stage, he or she is obviously not experiencing the feelings of love, anger, despair, and so on, of the character they are playing. But they start to speak, and because of the words they are saying, not only do they begin to have these feelings more and more, but they communicate emotion to the audience, for the words activate forces, and these affect the public. When you reflect on these facts, you realize how very careful you have to be not to allow yourself to speak words that will bring about misfortune and destruction.

So many people boast that they tell the truth, when often they would do better to keep quiet! For example, a man may confide in his friend that he has concerns about his own wife’s attitude – is she being unfaithful? And the friend, knowing what is going on, thinks it is his duty to tell the truth and confirms that his wife is deceiving him. As a result, the husband, who is insanely jealous, catches his wife with her lover and kills them with one shot from a revolver and then blows his own brains out in despair. You may consider this a rather simplistic way of presenting things, but it isn’t really. Look how much harm humans do under the pretext of telling the truth! Truth is an excellent thing, provided you first consult wisdom, so that you know how, when and to whom to tell it. Otherwise, there is nothing more disastrous than truth, when wisdom is not present to give the correct dosage and directions; love, too, of course. For, all three – love, wisdom and truth – are connected and must always work together.

In moments of discouragement, artists (painters, composers, poets, novelists, playwrights, etc.) have been known to destroy some of their masterpieces. This is a shame, for they harm themselves and also deprive humanity of something great and beautiful. The reason for their action is that they have remained too focused on themselves, on their difficulties, anxieties and torments. They have been unable to go beyond the limits of their ego to make contact with all that is good and beautiful in humans and in nature. This is the only attitude that could have protected them and prevented them from turning their dissatisfaction against their work. Like artists, those on a spiritual path can go through periods of discouragement, for they walk a difficult path, and they must know how to protect themselves. How? By looking with wonder on the works of God and the servants of God. Thanks to this feeling of elation, they cure the despondency, even the despair, that their own imperfections can inspire in them.

Feeling is one thing and thinking another, but too often feeling colours thinking. Say you are feeling exhausted – which can happen – and this feeling triggers thoughts and feelings of discouragement, sadness or despair. Well, no, at such times, your thinking must influence your feeling: even if it is unable to quell it, it must be present like a light, like a beacon in the distance. Your thinking tells you that you can recover; then, despite your weariness and exhaustion, that is what you must believe, and not your feelings. So, there’s not a drop of energy left in your tank? Remember that the cosmic tank is full, and that it is there for you to go to in your thoughts for energy. For thinking is also used for this purpose: just a few drops from this reservoir of energy, and the flame of your nightlight, which was about to go out, is shining again.
