1. Noble Truth of Suffering

2 Noble Truth of the Cause of Suffering

3. Noble Truth of the End of Suffering

4. Noble Truth of the Middle Path or the Nobel Eightfold Path

This path leads to the end of all suffering, If we avoid harming all other living beings, if we sharpen and focus our mind, and if we gain wisdom, each of us can reach perfect happiness, the end of all misery. The way to end suffering is to follow the Noble Eightfold Path namely:

Right Understanding
Right Thought
Right Speech
Right Action
Right Livelihood
Right Effort
Right Mindfulness
Right Concentration

IMHO, you can't go wrong in life if you follow those teachings, cause they all lead to the same thing...being true to yourself and who you really are, which is love. hf

When you are deluded and full of doubt, even a thousand books of scripture are not enough. When you have realized understanding, even one word is too much.Fenyang Shanzhao
I'm only human, it's my biggest flaw.

We must all realize a sink a chair and a pillow are all luxuries of home and a soldiers helmet takes the place of all three.

I guess life was simpler in VIth Century bC India... Prince Siddharta had his experience and his illumination, but today things are a bit more complex...

well growing up man does suffer... if he does not he doesn't AsK questions and learn.. One of Man's biggest problems in his mindal growth is around learning the ACCURATE CAUSE.... of just about anything.. he does not obtain wisdom in a situation until he sees the cause of it.. which is often but not always himself. Christians would be much better if they tossed a little Buddha into their religion. they would be more responsible. as a group they are going to have a suffer more before they learn cause and responsibility.

I don't doubt it, but let me be a bit sceptical about the efficient application of the "basic principals". According to yourself, even you chose another path.

Yeah, forget the Vimanas and all that stuff (if you're referring to that). Life essentially was a country life with some urban conforts -and miseries- with a lot of differences about castes or social classes, races and roles and taboos, aristocrats-land owners, priests, artisans and the rest of the working and servant people. Life was simpler in a lot of ways.

Re: What do the 4 Noble Truths mean to you in everyday life?
K, here is an example/application to modern life.
A person has money issues because they can't fin a job no matter how hard they try. They become depressed, they pray, NOTHING HAPPENS... They find this, THEY STOP LOOKING FOR SUCCESS (with money) BECAUSE THEY ACCEPT THAT "LIFE IS SUFFERING"
That thought can be VERY comforting (for a while) in difficult times. But you have to incorperate it with all the other ideas for it to work.

Note: I used to be Buddhist for a long time but after a while just coudn't get down with the "life is suffering" thing. IBut for a lgon time it brought me peace and the religion STILL means a lot to me hf)

Re: What do the 4 Noble Truths mean to you in everyday life?
I think it's to overcome the influence of the world, everything material, the greed and corruption that comes from it.

having a certain mindset takes you away from that material way of looking at things and you won't get caught up in it.

It just makes you think, much of this, the old theories/theology was based on the thoughts of the wise at the time they were living, based on the society they had experienced, perhaps if they were alive today, they would have to adapt differently, or offer different advice, adapted to the current way society is.

ofcourse the basic teaching, the core would still be the same.

valuing material goods over human spirit is bad :D
