Chicago Passes 'Living Wage Law'
'Big-Box' Retailers Like Wal-Mart Required to Pay Workers Higher Wages

By BARBARA PINTO

July 26, 2006 — - Weeks of heated debate ended in passage of a "living wage law" in Chicago -- the first in the nation to target mega-retailers.

City aldermen passed the measure in a 35-14 vote after more than three hours of impassioned arguments. It will require Wal-Mart and other so-called big-box stores, including Target and Home Depot, to pay workers a minimum of $9.25 an hour -- up from the city's current minimum of $6.25.

After the vote, outside city council chambers, supporters of the legislation chanted, "We beat Wal-Mart."

The law will apply only to stores with at least 90,000 square feet and a billion dollars in annual sales companywide.

Community Workers Welcome the News

In one struggling westside Chicago neighborhood, where workers are putting the finishing touches on the city's first Wal-Mart, the new law is welcome news.

"People have bills, rent to pay, and $6 an hour is not going to work for them," says Kanisha Adams, a nursing student.

The next superstore will not be in Chicago, maybe Cicero where this law does not apply. 9000 applicaations for 450 jobs, and we are told the unemployment rate nationally is @5%?

The cost of these wages is passed on to
the consumers by raising the prices
of goods.

The local community is essentially paying the higher wages out of thier
pockets.
So all you Wally world employees had
better send a nice thank you letter to
everyone for shelling out the cash to
cover your ass.

But many fear higher wage costs could drive retailers and jobs out of the city, and that could have particular consequences for the city's minority workers.

Build the store with 89,000 sq ft.

The City of Chicago is hard up for cash to pay for all the corruption. They raised the cigarette tax to one of the highest in the nation and shoppers go to the next county.

The companies usually do pass higher costs into higher prices, but at what point could the CEO and Board make maybe $10,000,000 a year instead of $25,000,000 a year and pay people what they need to make in order to survive?

Liberal idiots, you make me laugh. Why not pass a law that says that nobody is allowed to have more then ten million dollars in personal wealth and anymore is confiscated and given to the poor? Wouldn't that be great? or let's make minimum wage 50 bucks an hour then we won't need to work hard at all! We could all get easy jobs that pay good money! We wouldn't need college or small business or anything! all we need to do is take the money from them rich fuckers and spread it around! WoooooPeeeee!!! What would really happen Libtards is that business would move away, kill expansion, and you could all have a 9 buck an hour Min wage and no jobs, that's reality. It'll never happen anyway so the point is moot and all it is political hand holding and Kumbya and lookie what we got for you...or we tried, but believe me, they know it'll never stand. The only people who will make any more money are the lawyers, who could give a rats ass about minimum wage.

Time for you to start learning some things.

Do you realize that Exxon, for example is making profit of $80,000 a MINUTE? Do you realize that EVERY minute they earn more than than the average American in PROFIT?? Your sweat and mine, honey.

Don't DARE tell me that it's fine and dandy that they're making profit of over $114 MILLION a day.

They're buying back their own stock from shareholders with the majority of it, and spending only a pittance on new sources for oil.

Why aren't they working on alternative energies??

THAT's where the obscene profit many companies are making should go...to lessen the burden on EVERYONE.

The rich keep getting richer, and it's time for some corporate whipping to take place by the congresscritters to tax the living bushchit outta them to the tune of 100% over their lowest year's profit.

Anyways, that's what I'd do.

Some people just don't understand what a real society is. True growth comes from the realization that business is supposed to GIVE BACK to the people. So, in a way, those rich fucks are supposed to be improving our lives with their money. Instead of hoarding all the funds for themselves, they are supposed to be building bridges and improving highways. They are supposed to improve our education systems(especially the quality of the computers etc).

They are supposed to fund free energy. Like someone else said, those fucks needs some real regulation.

what will most likely happen is that some stores will close, and move to areas outside the city, resulting in workers losing jobs, lower tax revenue for the city, and longer, more expensive commutes for workers.
