That said telephone employees could go down in the basement and open lines to listen in on and often did. This, with triangulation it was 10... 15 years ago. Now they can know with an accuracy of 5... 10 m where you are. At least if you are in a dense urban environment you are connected to something called small cells (most of the modern mobiles are 4G or 3G, so most of the time you are in 4G or 3G)

For rural, when supposedly you are in 2G in GSM and GPRS/EDGE services, there is something called Timed Advance in 2G and based only on that and the cell you are on and the reported neighbor cells, every cell is reporting, they can easily pinpoint you with accuracy of 550 m (in rural is good enough), etc

All those systems were engineered with location in mind...
